OCCUPATIONS

The census data for 1921 has been used to identify the occupations of those named on the quilt. We have considered those over fifteen years of age to be employed and have categorised married women as housewives where no paid occupation was given in the census.

Reflecting the rural nature of Culross Township almost half the adult population are occupied in farming. Retail trade makes up the next largest category, variously described as merchant, grocer, butcher, baker, storekeeper and clerk. The community is supported by three teachers, a doctor, a dentist, a druggist, two nurses and a veterinarian. The presence of a dressmaker and two milliners indicate some disposable income was available.

Only two ministers of religion have been identified despite six religions being represented in the community.
