THE CULROSS QUILT

A CANADIAN WORLD WAR I QUILT

RELIGIONS AND ORIGINS

The predominant religion is Presbyterian and this almost certainly reflects the largely Scottish origins of the Culross community.

Only two ministers of religion have been identified despite six religions being represented in the community. The Reverend Christian “Norman” McKenzie led the Presbyterian church and the Reverend Frederick Ernest Clysdale, the Methodist church.

Five years after the quilt was made, the regular census was taken across Canada. We have analysed the religions and origins of those living in the Culross Township from this census data.

The proportion of Roman Catholics in the general population compared with those who are named on the quilt is very significantly higher. This may be accounted for by the numbers of Irish and of German descent in the general population - see the chart at the foot of the page.
