Southey Bowdoin Bull was born on 5 June 1852 in Accomack, Virginia to Thomas Southey Bull (1788-1860) and Mary ‘Polly’ Mapp (1807-1859). Southey had eight siblings, Mary Susan (1829-1897), Margaret Virginia (1831-1886), Ann T (1833-1836), Elizabeth (Lizzie) (1834-1890), George E (1836-1900), Charlotte Emma (1838-1860), Henry Clay (1845-1865)and Benjamin Franklin (b 1848) and two half siblings, Thomas William (1816-1860) and Edward S (1820-1856).

Southey married Frances Louisa Ames on 16 February 1869 in Accomack. Frances was born on 10 December 1849 in Accomack to Richard Thomas Ames (1819-1883) and Louisa Susan Taylor (1822-1912). Frances had seven siblings, Annie T (1843-1879), Rebecca (1846-1873), Margaret Elizabeth (1852-1941), Birdie B (1855-1942), Georgia T (1857-1881), Ellena (Lena) (1860-1930) and Richard Dix (1862-1939).

Southey and Frances had three children,

Southey Bowdoin Jr (1872-1949),
Ryland Ames (1876-1939) and
Eula Louisa Frances (1883-1927).

Eula Louisa Frances Bull was born on 5 September in Davis Wharf, Accomack. She lived on the farm with her parents throughout her life and did not marry. She died on 28 April 1927 in Norfolk, Virginia.

Southey farmed in Pungoteague. Frances died on 8 December 1924 and Southey died on 30 March 1928 in Norfolk, Virginia.

Southey Sr’s brother, Edward S Bull (1820-1856), married Susan Kellam (1825-1900) on 26 December 1843 in Accomack. Edward and Susan had four children,

Virginia (b 1845),
Esther Elizabeth (1845-1900),
Sheppard “Shep” T (1848-1912) and
Joseph Staples (1850-1923).

Joseph Staples Bull was born on 11 June 1850 in Accomack. In his twenties he was a sailor. He married Fanny L Rogers on 5 November 1879 in Bobtown , Virginia. Fanny was born on 5 March 1862 in Accomack to Arthur M Rogers (1824-1892) and Mary Elizabeth Phillips (1841-1916). Fanny had three siblings, William A M (1868-1868), George M (1873-1873) and Carroll Ashby (1878-1936).

Joseph and Fanny had two children,

Arthur Clyde (1880-1911) and
Susie Elizabeth (1885-1963).

Joseph was farming in Pungoteague during the 1880s and subsequently. Fanny died on 14 December 1893 in Accomack.

Joseph married Mary “Mamie” Elizabeth Rogers on 25 March 1896 in Onancock, Virginia. Mamie was born on 8 October 1878 in Onancock to William Francis Rodgers (1847-1896) and Carolyne Lee “Carrie” Chandler (185-1914). (Mamie’s grandfather, John K Rogers, was the brother of Fanny’s father, Arthur M Rogers, so they were first-cousins once removed.) Mamie had two siblings, Hattie C (1872-1943) and John R (1886-1918).

Joseph and Mamie had one child,

Fannie Rogers (1906-1982).

Fannie Rogers Bull was born on 24 June 1906 in Onley, Accomack. Fannie married Paul Riley Kidd Donahoe in about 1925. Paul was born on 4 March 1896 in West Virginia to Stephen Alexander Donahoe (1870-1935) and Leona Ellen Rollyson (1871-1942). Paul had three siblings, Willie Ethel (1892-1927), Eugene Wallace (1900-1967) and Leona Ellen (1916-1917).

Fannie and Paul had four children,

Joseph Stephen (1927-2009),
Paul Riley (1930-1981),
Mary Ellen (1932-2000) and
William Rollyson (1935-1995).

Paul was a music teacher. He died on 5 December 1979 in Danville, Virginia. Fannie died on 27 June 1982, also in Danville.

Joseph farmed in Pungoteague. He died on 6 April 1923 in Onley, Accomack. Mamie died on 17 November 1946 also in Onley.

Joseph’s mother-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Phillips (1841-1916) was the daughter of Levin Wesley Phillips (1815-1891) and Susan E Ashby (1823-1879). Mary had eight siblings, Sallie E (1843-1915), George Custis (1846-1898), John Wesley (1848-1932), Arinthia S (1850-1897), Olivia B (1856-1883), Louisa/Llewellyn (1860-1941), Robert Coleburn (1861-1953) and Lee Roy (1863-1927).

George Custis Phillips (1846-1898) married Margaret A Martin (1852-1928). They had two children,

William Henry (1877-1963) and
Harold Martin (1889-1977).

Harold Martin Phillips was born on 5 August 1889 in Accomack. He married Margaret Elizabeth Bull on 17 December 1914 in Onancock, Accomack. Margaret was born on 31 December 1888 in Accomack to James R Bull (1854-1908) and Alice Lee Stockley (1854-1923). Margaret had seven siblings, Robert Sylvester (1877-1933), Mary S (1880-1919), Carrie Lee Chandler (1882-1928), Beach Julia (1890-1966), Hattie W (1890-1947), Lola Fletcher (1892-1959) and Clarence Colbourne (1894-1948).

Harold and Margaret had two children,

 Elizabeth M (17 Aug 1915) and
Charlotte Stockley (1921-1996).

Elizabeth M Phillips was born on 17 August 1915 in Melfa, Accomack. Elizabeth married Arthur Clyde Miles in about 1938. They moved to Newport News where Arthur worked for the Union Insurance Company. Elizabeth and Arthur had one son, Arthur Clyde Jr born in 1940. Arthur Sr died on 31 December 1992 in Melfa, Accomack. Elizabeth died on 4 September 2005 in Nassawadox, Northampton.

Harold owned and ran a general store in Pungoteague. Margaret died on 1 April 1961 in Melfa, Accomack. Harold died on 5 August 1977 also in Melfa.

Robert Sylvester Bull was born on 4 October 1877 in Accomack. He married Lois Emma Williams in about 1913 in Accomack. Lois was born in April 1877 in Abergelle, Denbighshire, Wales to Edward Williams (1836-1915) and Frances Foulkes (1838-1901). Lois had eight siblings, John F (1860-1934), Robert Edward (b 1862), Thomas Parry (1864-1948), Susannah Lois (1867-1953), Elizabeth Anne (1869-1938), Sarah Walton (1871-1901), Edward Watkin (b 1873) and Frances Mary (1874-1914).

Lois’ brother, Robert Edward emigrated to America in about 1883. Lois sailed from Liverpool in SS ‘Oceanic’ in early September 1903 and arrived in New York on 16 September. She gave Robert as her contact in the US.

Robert Sylvester served in the military in WWI and subsequently farmed in Pungoteague. He died there on 30 July 1933. Lois returned to the UK in 1935, arriving in Southampton on 10 September. She died in 1949 in Denbighshire, Wales.
