Joseph Hart Hiden was born on 6 January 1866 in Fluvanna County, Virginia to James Conway Hiden (1837-1918) and Elizabeth C 'Bessie' Chewning (1862-1938. Joseph had four siblings, Robert Grace/Graves (1867-1925), Mary G (B 1869), Grace C (1869-1955) and Anna (B 1870).

Joseph studied medicine at University of Richmond and was a doctor in general practice on Pungoteague throughout his life. Joseph was a member of the Seaboard Medical Association and at their meeting on 9 December 1909 presented a paper “Experiences with Puerperal Eclampsia” reflecting his work in the community.

Joseph married Ellen Zipporah (Nellie) Battaile on 30 March 1891 in Accomack. Nellie was born on 16 June 1868 in Accomack to Henry Battaile (1830-1910) and Adelaide “Addie” M Rogers (1838-1881). Nellie had seven siblings, George Seymour (1863-1885), Ann Hay Taliaferro (1864-1899), Mary Louise (1866-1941), Francis W (1870-1909), Margaret "Maggie" Sue (1872-1963), Henrietta Adelaide (1875-1961) and Estelle Conway (1878-1968).

Joseph and Nellie had two children,

Robert Battaile (1897-1984) and
Joseph Conway (1908-1968).

Robert Battaile Hiden was born on 4 February 1897 in Pungoteague. He studied medicine at University of Virginia, Charlottesville, graduating as a Doctor of Medicine on 12 June 1923. Robert married Clotilda Rhodes Waddell on 23 June 1930 in Newport News, Virginia. Clotilda was born on 9 December 1902 in Albermarle, Virginia to Harry Gordon Waddell (1869-1936) and Mabel F Rhodes (1874-1941). Clotilda had two siblings, Isabell Hill (1898-1959) and Robert (1901-1974).

Robert worked at the Silver Hill Foundation, New Canaan, Connecticut and was appointed Assistant Medical Director in 1964. Robert died on 3 February 1984 in New Canaan and Clotilda died on 10 February 1989 also in New Canaan.

Joseph Conway Hiden was born on 11 November 1911 in Pungoteague. Joseph studied medecine at University of Virginia, Charlottesville in the 1920s. Joseph moved to Burlington, New Jersey to assist Dr Ehphraim Roland Mulford in about August 1927. He married Dr Mulford’s daughter, Louise Gray Mulford on 20 February 1928 in Burlington.

Louise was born on 12 September 1908 in Albermarle, Virginia to Ehphraim Roland Mulford Jr (1880-1939) and Matha James (Mattie) Anderson (1883-1970). Louise had seven siblings, Caroline W (1905-1986), Ephraim Roland (1905-1976), Martha M (1907-2003), Richard Anderson (1910-1923), William P (1915-1993), James M (1920-1975) and David B (1926-1996).

Joseph and Louise continued to live in New Jersey and in the 1930s Joseph joined Princeton University as assistant university physician. Joseph and Louise had two children,

Louise Bataille (1934-2000) and
Conway Barbour (1936-2007).

Joseph died on 8 April 1928 in Chatham, Morris, New Jersey. Louise died on 21 April 1986 in Beverly, Burlington, New Jersey.

Joseph died on 10 September 1937 in Pungoteague and Nellie died on 4 August 1964 in Accomack.

Margaret "Maggie" Sue Battaile was born on 23 July 1872 in Boggs Wharf, Accomack. Maggie trained in music at Hollins Institute, Virginia and then taught at the Southside Female Institute in 1890s. She joined the Pungoteague Institute at its founding in 1899, heading the music department. The Assistant Principal was Ashton Conway Southall. Maggie and Ashton were married on 21 October 1901.

Ashton was born on 6 April 1878 in Campbell county, Virginia to William Smith Southall (1848-1928) and Ella J Bugg (1849-1893). Ashton had four siblings, John B (1871-1875), Willie W (1847-1875), Hubert Roland (1880-1952) and Irine Norwood (1882-1893).

Ashton worked for the Produce Exchange in Onley, Accomack. He died on 9 August 1902 in Onley.

After the death of her husband, Maggie lived with her father’s second wife Susan Seymour Battaile née Rogers (1849-1929). Maggie married Ira Festus Davis on 7 May 1921 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Ira was born on 19 October 1875 in Fayetteville, Fayette, West Virginia to Madison Thenton Davis Sr (1848-1938) and Nannie Jones (1855-1882). Ira had two siblings, Mary L (b 1878) and Madison Thenton Jr (1879-1935).

Ira was a widower having been married to Ann Hiden (b 1870) by whom he had two daughters,

Mary Grace (1896-1947) and
Nancy Lee (1901-1925).

Ann Hiden was born in March 1870 to James Conway Hiden (1837-1918) and Elizabeth C ‘Bessie’ Chewning (1843-1937) (see above).

Ira was civil engineer working in the mining industry. He died on 19 March 1960 in Nassawadox and Maggie died on 30 October 1963 also in Nassawadox.

Hubert Roland Southall was born on 17 August in Lynchburg, Virginia. He worked in banking as a broker and salesman having moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Hubert married Margaret V Kane on 27 October 1923 in Reading, Berks, Pennsylvania. Margaret was born on 30 June 1884 in Reading to John J Kane (1847-1916) and Agnes B McHale (1853-1926). Margaret had six siblings, Rose Gabrielle (1873-1942), James P (1877-1958), Anna F (1884-1964), Nellie C (1889-1948), Dorothy Alice (1893-1979) and John Paul (1896-1946).

In 1940, Hubert worked as a statistician fro the Berks County Trust Company. He died on 9 September 1953 in Reading. Margaret died on 9 April 1955 also in Reading.

William Smith Southall was born on 1 August 1848 in Amherst, Virginia to John Dudley Southall (1824-1893) and Sara E Smith (1829-1910). He had two siblings, Henry A (1855-1908) and Mattie D (1866-1867). William farmed in Charlotte, Virginia and married Ella J Bugg there on 28 October 1869. Ella was born in 1849 in Charlotte to Zachariah Isaac Bugg (1801-1872) and Mary Jane Goode (1815-1885). Ella had five siblings, Mary Barkside (1834-1925), John R (1838-1917), Lucy Ann (1844-1897), A G (b 1845) and Robert Thomas Sr (1854-1928).

In 1880, William and family were living in Lynchburg, Campbell, Virginia where he was a shoe merchant. Ella died on 9 August 1893 and is buried in Elkton, Rockingham, Virginia.

William married Mary (Minnie) Virginia Miller on 3 February 1895 in Rockingham, Virginia. Minnie was born on 13 April 1855 in Rockingham to William Shanks Miller (1815-1892) and Sara Ann Gibbons (1820-1910). Minnie had two brothers, John Jacob (1848-1849) and Charles William (1849-1851).

William died on 28 February 1928 in Harrisonburg, Virginia and Minnie died on 11 May 1851 also in Harrisonburg.

Henry A Southall was born on 16 July 1855 in Charlotte county, Virginia. Henry was working as a grocer when he married Mary Beth Belt in about 1888. Mary was born on 13 November 1860 in Pittsylvania, Virginia to Dr Humphrey Singleton Belt (1827-1888) and Mollie Angeline Daniel (1836-1917). Mary had three brothers, Walter Gilmer (1862-1890), Benjamin Lloyd (1867-1937) and Humphrey Singleton III (1869-1926).

By 1899, Humphrey had become District Manager for Sun Life Assurance of Canada in their Lynchburg offices. Humphrey and Mary lived at 109 Federal Street and then 1005 Taylor Street in Lynchburg. Humphrey died on 14 November 1908 and Mary died on 29 September 1922 in South Boston, Halifax, Virginia.
