DION GEORGE AGATHOIN, ELLA BOGGS AGATHOIN née WISE,
GEORGE LEE AGATHOIN, LESTER IRVING AGATHOIN,
WALTER BYRON ASHBY,
MARGARET THOMAS GUY née YOUNG and BIRDIE ESTELLE GUY

Dion George Agathoin was born on 27 April 1857 in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada. His parents were John Nesbitt/Nisbet and Elizabeth (1784-1873). According to his death certificate, his parents were George Agathoin and Jessie Bigney Woods, so it may be that he was adopted following the death of his birth mother. Dion came to the US in 1873. He was named Agathoin and a widower when he married Ella Boggs Wise on 25 May 1892 in Pungoteague. Ella was born on 30 March 1871 in Harborton, Accomack to Benjamin Darby Wise (1822-1892) and Louisa Sturgis (1832-1912). Ella had five siblings William (1852-1857), Benjamin F (1856-1857), Rose Estelle (1861-1942), Mary S (1861-1932) and Margaret Vianna (1866-1960).

Dion and Ella had five children,

Ella Elizabeth (Beth) (1893-1961),
Winnie Catherine Hill (1896-1987),
Maude Louise (1897-1966),
George Lee (1900-1965) and
Lester Irving (1900-1984).

Beth was born on 12 April 1893; she worked as a sales lady in a department store and later as a bookkeeper. Beth did not marry and lived with her widowed mother. She died on 22 May 1961 and is buried in St Georges Cemetery, Pungoteague, Virginia.

Winnie was born on 23 December 1896 in Harborton, Virginia; she married Walter Byron Ashby on 30 December 1914 in Pungoteague. Walter was born on 5 March 1894 in Wardtown, Virginia to John Thomas Ashby (1854-1931) and Llewellyn Frances (Ella) Goffigon (1856-1939). Walter had three siblings, Ella Maud (1880-1904), William Samuel (1881-1957) and John Colbourn (1882-1962). Winnie and Walter had two children,

Walter Byron Jr (1915-1981) and
George Milton (1917-1991).

Walter Byron Ashby Jr was born on 24 September 1915 in Shields, Virginia. He was a truck driver for an oil company when he enlisted for WWII. Walter married Mary Elizabeth Burton (1921-2011) around 1942. Walter and Mary had two children. Walter died on 24 December 1981 in Nassawadox, Virginia and Mary died on 3 July 2011 in Cambridge, Maryland.

Winnie and Walter divorced in 1930 and Walter died on 18 March 1951 in Exmore, Virginia. After the divorce Winnie worked as a sales lady in a departmental store. She married Franklin Monroe Hill (1905-1987) on 20 June 1936 in Portsmouth, Virginia. Winnie died on 16 May 1987, Nassawadox, Northampton County, Virginia.

Maude was known as Louise. She married Charles Maurice Bull on 13 September 1916. Charles was born on 23 November 1891 in Keller, Accomack to Henry Lee Bull (1862-1937) and Amanda Bundick (1862-1914). He had two siblings, Edith Byred Willis (1886-1977) and Willard Stanley (1895-1963). Charles and Louise had three children. Charles died on 2 December 1964 in Harborton, Virginia and Louise died on 15 December 1966 in Nassawadox, Virginia.

George Lee and Lester Irving Agathoin were twins born on 12 January 1900 in Harborton. Both brothers worked as house painters, possibly in their father’s business.

George married Carrie Parker in about 1935. Carrie was born on 7 December 1907 in Pungoteague to James Daniel Parker (1886-1956) and Annie Mattie Priscilla Mrears (1888-1979). George and Carrie had two children. George died on 10 July 1955 and Carrie on 29 August 1991.

Lester married Mary Elizabeth Mapp in about 1930. Mary was born on 22 October 1901 probably in Eastville, Virginia to Frederick G Mapp (1853-1911) and Arinthia Beulah Peed (1863-1934). Mary died in Harborton on 25 December 1975 and Lester died on 27 Feb 1984 also in Harborton.

Dion George Agathoin wrote all the names in the Pungoteague quilt and included a message in the top right hand corner of the quilt which you can see here:

While the writing of the names on this quilt has been no small task, it has been one that has brought to me much pleasure because of the fact that somebody’s boy would find thereon the names of loved ones. D. G. Agathoin.

Margaret Vianna Wise, the sister of Ella Boggs Wise, married Robert Lee Guy (1867-1951) on 31 May 1893 in Accomac. Robert was born on 17 March 1867 in Harborton to Robert P Guy (1818-1876) and Margaret Thomas Young (1831-1923). Robert Lee had one sister, Mary E (1870-1887) and four step-siblings born to Robert P’s first wife, Tabitha A Chandler (1821-1864).

Robert and Margaret had five children,

Birdie Estelle (1894-1972),
Robert Healy (1895-1979),
Mary Odell (b 1898),
Madaline T (1903-1982) and
Irvine Hunter (1908-1976).

Birdie was born on 21 May 1894 probably in Pungoteague. Birdie did not marry and was a housekeeper in later years. She died on 9 September 1972 in Saint Petersburg, Pinellas, Florida.
