Samuel William Ames was born on 25 August 1862 in Pungoteague, Virginia to Asa Leonard Hall Ames (1831-1912) and Virginia Susan Joynes (1839-1913). Samuel had seven siblings, Charles Hall (1858-1917), Edward Joynes (1867-1941), Leonard Oswald (1869-1923), Leven Gordon (1870-1918), Walter Clarence (1875-1951), Annie Virginia (Jane) (1878-1952) and May L (1880-1881). Samuel’s father was a dry goods merchant in Pungoteague and Samuel worked in the family store. He married Sarah “Annie” Edmonds Mears on 28 October 1884. Annie was born on 28 October 1865 in Accomack, Virginia to Benjamin William Mears (1833-1896) and Emma Susan Mapp (1839-1914). Annie had eight siblings, Ella P (1858-1858), Leonard Cecil (1861-1935), Otho Frederick (1862-1931), Emma Cora (1868-1956), Eva (1872-1873), Harry Everett (1875-1935), John Bowdoin, MD (1879-1947) and Charles Benjamin (1880-1943).

Samuel and Annie had six children,

Milton Benjamin Sr (1885-1951),
Susie May (1888-1969),
Emma Virginia (1892-1969),
Nannie Wharton (1893-1982),
Lucy Mears (1896-1994) and
“Cora Byrd” (1898-1968).

Milton Benjamin Ames Sr was born on 6 November 1885 in Pungoteague. He worked as a cashier in the local bank. Milton married Mabel Jordan Roberts on 28 February 1912. Mabel was born on 8 August 1890 in Norfolk, Virginia to Leonard Pascal Roberts (1852-1939) and Ruth Jordan (1860-1908). Mabel had six siblings, Elizabeth (1879-1954), William Watson (1880-1938), Leonard Pascal Jr (1885-1942), Henry Hunter (b 1889), Annette Taylor (1890-1955) and Nathaniel Littleton Savage (1899-1948).

Milton and Mabel had three children,

Milton Benjamin Jr (1913-1992),
William Jordan (1915-2001) and
Samuel Roberts (1919-2006).

Milton Sr moved into the insurance business and became a manager. He died on 15 June 1951 in Norfolk. Mabel died on 16 January 1971 also in Norfolk.

Susie May Ames was born on 10 January 1888 in Pungoteague. Susie taught history in school and later moved to Lynchburg City to continue her teaching. Susie never married. On her death on 30 July 1969 she was described as ‘professor’.

Emma “Virginia” Ames was born on 29 January 1892 in Accomack. Virginia married Harvey Stansworth Givler on 3 December 1919 in Pungoteague. Harvey was born on 18 April 1891 in Gloucester County, Virginia to Isaac McGallagher Givler (1854-1936) and Margaret Pratt (1859-1944). Harvey had four siblings, John Sylvester (1880-1890), Edwin Pratt (1882-1905), Annie Elizabeth (1884-1979) and Ruby Cecelia (1886-1887). Harvey was a buyer for a paper manufacturer. Virgnia and Harvey had two daughters,

Anna Mears (b 1920) and
Margaret Pratt (1923-2008).

Harvey died on 26 January 1968 in Norfolk. Virginia died on 22 July 1969 in Newport News.

Nannie Wharton Ames was born on 11 December 1893 in Accomack. Nannie travelled to Europe in the 1920s with her sister Susie. They returned to New York on SS “George Washington” on 9 September 1927.

Nannie married Littleton Holland Mears in June 1931. Littleton was born on 15 January 1897 in Eastville, Virginia to Otho Frederick Mears (1862-1931) and Florence Rowena Holland (1870-1923). Littleton had five siblings, Cecil Fredrick (1892-1969), Benjiman (1894-1961), Jewell Whitaker (1898-1984), Emma W (1901-1987) and Otho Frederick Jr (1901-1984).

Littleton farmed in Eastville and later became an attorney and realtor. He died on 1 December 1973. Nannie died on 8 October 1982 in Onancock, Virginia.

Lucy Mears Ames was born on 31 May 1896 in Accomack. She married Ray Omer Edwards Sr on 18 November 1923 in Pungoteague. Ray was born on 14 August 1892 in Harvel, Illinois to Thomas Stoneham Edwards (1850-1907) and Sara Alice Strevey (1856-1906). Ray had two siblings, Louie T (1882-1888) and Lulu Orell May (1891-1973). Ray was an engineer and they moved to Duval, Florida where Ray worked for the health authority. Lucy and Ray had three children,

Ray Omer Jr (1924-1969),
Thomas Stoneham II (b 1928) and
Marie (b 1933).

Ray died on 21 September 1957. Lucy returned to Virginia and she died on 22 August 1994 in Woodford, Caroline, Virginia.

“Cora Byrd” Ames was born on 3 September 1898 in Pungoteague and lived on the family farm until her marriage to Levin “Floyd” Nock Jr in about 1927. Floyd Jr was born on 6 October 1895 in Accomack to Levin “Floyd” Nock Sr (1853-1920) and Ellen James Brittingham (1868-1966).

Floyd Sr was born on 20 December 1853 in Wachapreague to Levin Watson Nock (1826-1889) and Sarah Custis Floyd (1830-1904). Floyd Sr had eight siblings, James Glenn (1850-1923), Bettie Polly (1852-1924), Margaret Sarah (1856-1929), Fanny Watson (1859-1889), John Thomas (1861-1945), Georgia Wharton (1863-1904), Roberta "Bertie" Bowman (1865-1892) and Berry Floyd (1870-1870). He studied at Richmond College, Richmond, Virginia and became a lawyer and attorney. He married Ellen James Brittingham on 11 January 1888 in New Church, Accomack.

Ellen was born on 28 November 1868 in Accomack to John Massey Brittingham (1823-1898) and Esther Ann Marshall (1831-1915). Ellen had three siblings, Lloyd (1854-1937), Hiram (1856-1925) and Henrietta (1862-1863) and two half-brothers George W Tull (1849-1931) and John W Tull (1850-1852) by her mother’s first husband, John W Tull (1814-1851).

Floyd Jr had two sisters, Miriam Brittingham (1888-1970) and Sarah Esther (1890-1989). Floyd Jr farmed in Lee, Accomack. He and Cora Byrd had three children,

Ellen Brittingham (1929-2019),
Levin Floyd III (1932-1997) and
Samuel Ames (1936-2011).

Floyd Jr died on 22 March 1966 in Onancock and Cora Byrd died on 25 November 1968.

Samuel William Ames farmed in later life. He died on 29 April 1940. Annie died on 5 October 1956 in Nassawadox, Northampton, Virginia.

Leonard Oswald Ames, was born on 22 August 1869 in Accomack. He married Lillian S Doughty on 7 January 1890 in Accomack. Lillian was born on 2 June 1868 in Accomack to John Benjamin Doughty Sr (1841-1919) and Lanette/Linetta “Nettie” Roberts (1849-1931). Lillian had three siblings, John Benjamin Jr (1878-1926), Annie Rebecca (1880-1972) and Abel Thomas (1882-1946).

Leonard and Lillian had two children,

Stanley Doughty (1890-1968) and
Rebecca Mae (1903-1963).

Stanley Doughty Ames was born on 1 December 1890. He married Albertine French Kelley on 22 October 1912 in Accomack. Albertine was born in Pungoteague on 18 September 1893 to Joseph Curtis Kelley (1864-1939) (see below) and Bettie Eva Bonniwell (1866-1928). Albertine had three siblings, Margaret (Maud) Lavinia (1891-1978), Henry J (b 1899) and Joseph C (b 1901). Stanley worked as a bookkeeper and later cashier in a bank. He and Albertine had one son,

James Wallace Kelly Ames born on 1 June 1914 in Harborton, Accomack.

Known as Kelly, he worked as a bookkeeper probably for the B F Goodrich Company. He married Jaquelin Ambler Herrell on 14 May 1938 in Alexandria, Virginia. Jaquelin was born on 6 January 1915 in Washington, DC, USA to Robert Edward Herrell (1882-1953) and Sally Blount Mason (1876-1967). The couple lived at 303 DeWitt Ave, Alexandria.

Kelley and Jaquelin had one daughter, Judith Coleman (b 1943). After Kelley and Jaquelin divorced in 1945, Kelley married Virginia Kathleen Bonniwell (b 1926).

Kelly died on 27 September 1992 in Portsmouth, Virginia.

Stanley Doughty Ames died on 1 July 1968 in Keller, Virginia. Albertine French Kelley died on 12 October 1982 also in Keller.

Leonard farmed in Pungoteague. He died of pneumonia on 29 July 1923. Lillian died on 20 March 1948 in Accomack.

Annie Virginia (Jane) Ames was born on 23 August 1878 in Accomack. Jane married John Chandler Taylor on 28 August 1918 in Northampton. John was born on 1 January 1888 in Accomack to Samuel Thomas Taylor Sr (1857-1921) and Maria Eugenia “Genie” Hardy (1857-1923). John had eight siblings, William Hardy (1885-1959), Lucy Orgain (1889-1971), Sally Milby (1891-1978), Samuel Thomas Taylor Jr(1893-1956), Mary Eugenia (1895-1984), George Collier (1898-1964), Riley Griffin (1900-1968) and Anne V (1904-1984).

John owned a general store in Pungoteague. From about 1935 John was an elected Commissioner of Revenue. A post he held until his death on 22 January 1958 in Nassawadox, Northampton. He was pre-deceased by Jane on 23 November 1952 also in Nassawadox.

Joseph Curtis Kelley was born on 26 February 1864 in Little Egg Harbor Township, Burlington, New Jersey, USA to James Wallace Kelley (1836-1923) and Hannah Lavinia French (1845-1922). Joseph had nine siblings, Maggie M (1866-1952), James Wallace (1869-1876), Martha Lavinia (1872-1950), Josephine Emily (1874-1953), William Wallace (1877-1951), John Wynne (1879-1943), Mary Jane (1881-1971), Alphonse Willits (1884-1971) and Anna W (1888-1972). Joseph worked as an engineer aboard a steamship.

Joseph married Bettie Eva Bonniwell on 26 December 1888 in Accomack. Bettie was born on 7 March 1866 in Hacksneck, Accomack to John Thomas Bonnewell (1835-1917) and Margaret Ann Gibbons. Bettie had five siblings, John William (1858-1933), Benjamin Thomas 'Tom' (1863-1940), Robert Wellington (1868-1953), Jesse Lee (1871-1967) and George Cornelius (1874-1941). Joseph and Bettie had four children,

Margaret (Maud) Lavinia (1891-1978),
Albertine French (1893-1982) (see above),
Henry J (b 1899) and
Joseph C (b 1901).

Joseph became manager of a sawmill in Pungoteague. Bettie died on 14 June 1928 in Harborton. Joseph subsequently lived with Albertine and Stanley. He died on 6 April 1939 in Pungoteague.

Margaret Ann Gibbons was born on 13 March 1835 to Henry Gibbons (1812-1863?) and Levinia B Ames (1808-1887). Margaret had four siblings, Thomas (1833-1856), Benjamin (1838-1927), Lorie ( b1846) and Mary Ann (1849-1912). Margaret married John Thomas Bonnewell in about 1858. John farmed in Pungoteague. Margaret and John had six children,

Benjamin Thomas 'Tom' (1863-1940),
Bettie Eva (1866-1928) (see above),
Robert Wellington (1868-1953),
Jesse Lee (1871-1967) and
George Cornelius (1874-1941).

Jesse Lee Bonnewell was born on 15 November 1871 in Hacksneck, Accomack. He married Alice Lee Lewis on 15 January 1896 in Pungoteague. Jesse and Alice had seven children,

Cecil Fitzhugh (1899-1959),
Byron Orlander (1900-1974),
Eva May (1902-1979),
Ivan/Irvin Post (1908-1968),
Irene C (b 1909) and
Madeline/Madlyn Lewis (1910-2000).

Cecil Fitzhugh Bonniwell was born on 11 January 1899 in Hacksneck. (Some records have 27 January 1899). Cecil worked in the family grocery store as a clerk. He married Thelma/Velma Pearl Hickman probably around the mid 1930s. Velma was born on 11 November 1902 in Pungoteague to Randall C Hickman (1871-1961) and Bettie Lawrence (1866-1949). Velma had four siblings, Randall Garland (1899-1945), Grace V (1900-1995), John Lawrence (1904-1997) and Clarence Tull (1908-1961). Cecil died on 20 January 1959. Velma subsequently married Charlie Sanford Witham Jr (1894-1978). Velma died on 18 January 1986 in Nassawadox.

Eva May Bonniwell was born on 4 February 1902 in Hacks Neck, Accomack. She married Leonard Fletcher Beasley on 18 October 1918 in Pungoteague. Leonard was born on 21 March 1899 In Virginia to George Beasley (1868-1936) and Laura Mears (1868-1954). Leonard had three siblings, Bertie Thomas (1891-1979), Maggie (b 1892) and Lula (1895-1920). Subsequent to her divorce from Leonard, Eva ran a boarding house and married Upshur Lee Stevens (1891-1970) probably in the 1930s. Leonard died on 27 February 1959 in Nassawadox. Eva died on 23 May 1979 in Wachapreague.

Jesse worked variously as a trapper, storekeeper and oysterman. Alice died on 11 March 1949 in Nassawadox, Northampton, Virginia. Jesse died in Virginia Beach on 30 October 1967.

George Cornelius Bonniwell was born on 2 May 1874 in Pungoteague. He was appointed postmaster for Bobtown, Accomack on 3 May 1894. Cornelius married Sarah Ester (Essie) Mears on 5 October 1899 in Accomack. Essie was born on 26 November 1876 in Accomack to John A Mears (1849-1922) and Elizabeth Powell (1852-1933). Essie had five siblings, Frederick C (1879-1938), Amelia Floyd (1883-1961), Emma L (1887-1960), Thomas Pitts (1890-1961) and Lola V (1894-1972).

George farmed in Pungoteague alongside his father. He and Essie had one daughter,

Marion Estelle (1907-1987).

Marion was born on 25 April 1906 in Pungoteague. Marion graduated from the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia. Marion served with the US Navy attaining the rank of Lieutenant-Commander, she organized and was librarian at the Scientific and Technical Library, Navy Bureau of Ships, Washington (1944-1962) and moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 1976. Marion died on 15 September 1987 in Nashville; she was survived by her long term partner, Katherine Campbell Culbertson (1920-2002).

Whilst still farming, George earned a reputation as a seafood cook in the 1920s and 1930s to such an extent that he was appointed Fisheries Commissioner for the Eastern Shore in October 1938.

Essie died on 31 March 1939 in Pungoteague. George died on 16 August 1941 in Williamsburg, Virginia.

John died on 3 June 1917 in Harborton and Margaret died on 6 January 1922 in Pungoteague.
