BERTRAM MELVILLE WAKELING
Bertram Melville Wakeling was born in 1885 in Hereford, Herefordshire, England to Thomas Clarkson Wakeling (1861-1895) and Madeline "Lillian" Walker (1864). His known siblings were: Gwladys Hellen M (1887), Phyllis Esther (1889) and Dorothy. In 1901, the Wakeling family was living in Dyffryn, Merthyr Tydfil, Wales and Thomas' sister, Helen Martha, was living with them. Dorothy was not yet born and the only place that her name was found was in the obituary of Bertram where she was listed as a surviving sister living in England. It appeared that the family likely fell into difficult times after the death of Thomas in 1895. In 1901, Lillian was living on her own means, alone, in St Marylebone, London. During that same census year, Bertram and Gwladys were living with their grandmother, Eliza Wakeling and several aunts and uncles in Battersea, London. The location where Phyllis was living was not discovered, but Bertram's obituary placed her in England with the last name Dodwell at the time of his death. According to his obituary, Bertram was educated at Ascham House School, Eastbourne and St Paul's School, London.
Bertram boarded SS ‘Lake Manitoba’ in Liverpool, England on 7 March 1905 and arrived in St John, New Brunswick on 23 March. Between 1905 and 1908, he spent time at Melville and Moosomin, Saskatchewan. In 1908, he came to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to go to University. He was called to the bar in 1912, appointed a King's Council in 1929 and was appointed a magistrate in 1945.
He was first married to Keith (1990-1939). According to the 1916 and 1921 census records, the family was living at 712 Eastlake, Saskatoon and had 2 girls and a boy by 1921: Helen M (b 1916), John (b 1917) and Keith (b 1920). His obituary listed children: Joan, Keith, Thomas and another daughter, so presumably, children, Helen and John had predeceased him. The obituary of his son, Hon Thomas Clarkson Wakeling (19 May 1924 - 19 November 2005) named one sister that was still living and her name has been omitted from this biography to protect her privacy. There was a Helen Mary Wakeling buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Saskatoon, but she was not buried in the same plot as Bertram and Keith. Perhaps she was their daughter Helen M. If so, she died on 25 July 1921. Some time after the death of Keith, Bertram married Kathleen M (1906-1977). Bertram died on 16 May 1965 in Saskatoon and was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the same plot as both of his wives.
There is a review of his career here.
