THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

JAMES EDMOND TUBB

James Edmond Tubb was born on 10 September 1874 in Edmonton, Middlesex, England to James Henry Louis Tubb (1848-1914) and Emily Woodhatch (b 1849). His siblings were Emily (1866-1916), Albert (b 1874) and Florence Monsell (1882-1960). In 1881 and 1891, the Tubb family lived in Hornsey, Middlesex, England.

According to census records, James immigrated to Canada in 1904. He gained entry on a homestead on SW-18-35-4-W3 in the RM of Corman Park on 24 September 1904 and a grant was issued on 7 June 1908. His father, who apparently only immigrated in 1909, was issued a grant on SW-2-31-22-W3 in Oakdale RM on 2 November 1915. In some ways this was a bit odd as families often filed on land very close together and these pieces of land were over 200 km apart. Copies of the homestead records may be viewed on the Ancestry site. At the time of the 1906 census, James was working as a hired man for William Cherry and was living on 4-37-6-W3 with the Cherry family.

According to his homestead documents, James Edmond married Florence Alice Perris on 25 December 1906 and she began living on the homestead with him at that time. Florence was born in England in September 1878 and immigrated to Canada in 1906. James and Florence had four children: William "Louis" (1907-1968), Emily F (b 1910), Hyacinthe "Hortense" (1913-1984) and Vivian Irene (1914-2004). In 1911 and 1916, the family was enumerated on the homestead. However, in the 1916 Saskatoon Henderson City Directory, James was listed as a book keeper for Cockshutt Plow living at 1611 Coy Ave. WWI enlistment papers indicated that he enlisted for the War on 14 August 1916. Perhaps the family moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan that year so that they would not be isolated on the farm while James was at War. By 1921, they were living at 1418 Lorne Ave in Saskatoon and James was still employed as a book keeper. His obituary stated that, after the War, James worked for the Soldier's Settlement Board until he retired in 1938. Florence died on 8 December 1941 in Saskatoon and was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery. James moved to Vancouver, British Columbia in about 1948 and was residing there at the time of his death on 27 June 1958. He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Saskatoon.
