THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

JANET (JESSIE) DRON née WATTERS

Janet (Jessie) Watters was born about 1889 in Leith, Scotland to David Watters (b 1854) & Helen (b 1862). Jessie had three brothers, Thomas (b 1882), John (b 1885) & James (b 1892) and two sisters, Margaret (b 1887) & Helen Davina (b 1893). Jessie sailed on SS ‘Numidian’, leaving Glasgow on 4 March 1911. She appears to be one of a party of eleven women in their twenties who travelled in a group organised by a Mrs Radford. They arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia on 15 March.

Jessie married Charles B Dron (1883-1930) presumably shortly after her arrival. Charles was also from Leith, so it is possible they already knew one another in Scotland. Charles was born on 5 February 1883 to John W Dron (b 1851) & Margaret (b 1850). Charles had come to Canada in 1909 and was already living in Saskatoon at 400 1st Avenue and working as a carpenter. Jessie and Charles had two children, Margaret (b 1912) & Arthur Irving (b 1913).

They later moved to 206/208 10th St, Saskatoon. Charles enlisted in the CEF on 27 October 1914 in Saskatoon having already served in the Volunteers for two years.

In 1928, Jessie made a trip back to Scotland between June and September. She travelled on her own.

Charles died on 16 September 1930 in Saskatoon and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery. Jessie continued to live in Saskatoon until at least 1965.
