John Wesley Thurston was born on 7 November 1888 in Bobcaygeon, Victoria County, Ontario to George Thurston (b 1856) and Elizabeth Brown (1862-1903). His siblings were: Charles William (b 1872), Joseph Jonas (b 1880), Anne Elizabeth (b 1883), George Willington (b 1884), Stanley (b 1886), Rebecca "Cora" (b 1890) and Florence Kathleen (b 1892).
In 1891 and 1901, the Thurston family was living in Verulam, Ontario. John married Mary Jane Gallaway on 21 April 1915 in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba. She was born on 22 October 1887 in Howick, Huron County, Ontario to William Gallaway (b 1856) and Emma Peterman (b 1868). In 1891, the Gallaway family was living in Marquette, Manitoba.
By the time of the 1916 census, John, who was a brakeman working for the Canadian National Railway (CNR), and Mary had a 14 day old daughter and were living at 330 5th Ave N, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. In 1921 they were living at 312 11th St E and John was a conductor with the CNR. Over the years they had three more daughters and a son who are not named to protect privacy for potentially living people. Mary and John died in Calgary, Alberta on 15 March 1970 and 6 October 1980, respectively.
