JOHN SNOWDEN

John Snowden was born on 12 Nov 1888 in Alexandria, Dumbartonshire, Scotland to John (b 1850) & Elizabeth (b 1860). John had six sisters & five brothers. According to census records, he came to Canada in 1913. His wife Elizabeth Ferguson (1888) and two children John (1908) and Archibald Ferguson (1914-1919) boarded the SS 'Hesperian' in Glasgow and arrived in Quebec on 15 June 1914. Their destination was Saskatoon. In 1916 they were living at 716 Ave F North in Saskatoon. A daughter, Christina Margaret was born in Saskatoon in 1919. In 1916 John was a cashier. In the 1918 Saskatoon Henderson Directory, he was listed as an accountant for Cockshutt Plow and was living at 201 Ave I North. By 1921, the family was living at 1115 Ave B N and John was still employed as an accountant in the machine business. Archibald died in 1919 and was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Saskatoon. The address given on documentation for a trip that Elizabeth and Christina took to Scotland in 1928 was the same as the one in the 1921 census. Around 1930 the family moved to Calgary where initially they lived at 102 12 Ave W before moving to 1601 16th St NW where they remained until at least 1953. John continued to work for Cockshut Plow Co, eventually retiring in 1951 after 35 years as accountant or manager. No record further records have been found for John or Elizabeth.
