ARLINGTON INGALLS FARNAM, BERTHA AMANDA FARNAM née WOOD and

ALICE RUBLEE

Arlington Ingalls Farnam was born on 2 May 1857 in Quebec, Canada to Walter Farnam (1836-1908) & Mary Permelia Ingalls (1836-1902). Arlington had three sisters, Alma Louise (1862-1955), Sarah Elizabeth (b 1862) & Bertha Permelia (1873-1970) and three brothers, Walter Franklin (1866-1954), Wellington Meade (1871-1955) & Glen Henry (b 1881). Walter farmed in Dunham, Missisquoi and this is where the family grew up.

Arlington married Bertha Amanda Wood on 12 October 1881 in Sutton, Brome-Missisquoi, Quebec. Bertha was born on 9 September 1857 in Dunham, Missisquoi, Quebec to Louis Elvin Wood (1816-1871) & Hanna Amanda Curtis (1821-1861). Bertha had two sisters, Alice Augusta (1846-1937) & Harriet (b 1847) and two brothers, George I (b 1850) & Horace Elvin (1856-1918). Arlington & Bertha had one son, Walter Lynwood (1885-1930) and one daughter, Alice Arline (1886-1961).

Arlington & Bertha came to Saskatoon in 1910, where Arlington was, for a short time, the proprietor of Central Sask Auto Co of 344 2nd Avenue before becoming a real estate agent for a couple of years prior to his retirement. They lived at 114 4th Ave S from 1917-1921 and then in 1922 moved to California; first Culver City and then Long Beach. Bertha died on 21 December 1939 and Arlington on 19 May 1946.

Bertha’s sister Alice was born on 19 January 1846 in Dunham, Missisquoi, Quebec. She married Herbert Ashton Rublee (1842-1882) on 3 February 1869. Herbert was born on 23 February 1842 in Dunham, Missisquoi, Quebec to Myron Rublee (1806-1906) & Cordelia Williams (1813-1878). Herbert & Alice had one daughter, Winnie (1874-1874) and two sons, Charles M (b 1876) & Herbert Horace (1880-1966). Following the death of Herbert Sr in 1882, Alice came to England with Herbert Jr and was boarding at 49 Ladbrooke Grove, Kensington, London in 1901. Also boarding at the same house was Alice’s nephew, Walter Lynwood Farnam. The householders were Thomas Bruce (b 1863) & Alice M Bruce (b 1863) but we cannot see any family connections.

Alice returned to Saskatoon and was living at 509 11th St in 1915 and in 1921 was living with her son, Herbert at 718 Eastlake Avenue. We may assume that she continued to live with Herbert as she appears in the Henderson directory for 1930 at the same address. Alice died on 27 January 1937 and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon.

Herbert/Hubert Horace Rublee married Alice “Gertrude” Mills on 7 March 1906 in Brome, Quebec. Gertrude was born on 23 April 1885 in Knowlton, Quebec to Ernest Edward Mills (1854-1936) & Minnie Etta Hewson (1856-1935). Herbert & Gertrude had one daughter, Alice Mills (1907-1962) & one son, Ernest Herbert (1913-1914). Herbert & Alice moved to 718 Eastlake Ave, Saskatoon in 1912, initially working for Rolph & Co, retail grocers, as a clerk and bookkeeper. From 1919 Herbert was manager of North West Biscuit Co Ltd (subsequently renamed Independent Biscuit Co Ltd) until his retirement in 1949. He died in Saskatoon on 11 January 1966 and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery. Gertrude died on 1 January 1973 and is buried alongside her husband.

Alice Mills Rublee was born on 28 April 1907 in Knowlton, Quebec and lived with her parents throughout her life. Alice worked for the City Hospital in Saskatoon as a stenographer, cashier and then librarian from 1930 for over thirty years. She died on 28 April 1962 and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon.

There are three possible candidates for Alice Rublee:

Alice Augusta Rublee née Wood is Bertha’s sister, but Bertha & her husband, Arlington Farnam signed next to each other and the Alice Rublee signature is in a different block.

Alice Augusta Rublee’s daughter-in-law was Alice “Gertrude” Rublee née Mills and

Alice “Gertrude” Rublee’s daughter was Alice Mills Rublee.

Unless anyone recognises the signature we will never know.
