THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

ROSE MARIA SIBLEY

Rose Maria Sibley was born in 1878 in Highgate, Middlesex, England to Charles Sidney Sibley (1828-1903) and Eleanor Graticap Messina (b 1841). Her siblings were: Eleanor Elizabeth Reynolds (b 1866), William Nathaniel (b 1868) and Amelia Jane (b 1870). In 1881 she was living with her family in St Helens, Hampshire, England. By 1891 the Sibley family had moved to Woodgreen, Tottenham, Middlesex, England. They were still living there in 1911 and that year Rose was working as a clerk for a Blacking Manufacturer.

Rose immigrated to Canada in about 1913 and was living at 612 McPherson in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1916. She was a domestic in the home of Joseph R Baxter who was superintendent of the Daily Star. Also boarding in the same house were two compositors for the Daily Star, Thomas Merrifield and Alex McRobbie.

Rose married Thomas George Lang on 10 October 1921 in Vancouver, British Columbia. He was born on 17 July 1884 in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia to Walter Lang (1849-1939) and Katherine Isobel Elles (1858-1925). He was first married to Margaret Hamilton Lawson (1891-1918) and had two boys, James (b 1910) and Donald Charles (1918-2007). Thomas died on 5 November 1924 in Wisteria, British Columbia.

Nothing further was found about Rose. It is interesting that four members of the Baxter family and all of the lodgers that were with them in 1916 signed the quilt in the same area. This reinforces that we have successfully identified the correct people for these signatures.

This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Sibley Tree.
