ALONZO THORPE

Alonzo Thorpe was born on 11 June 1887 in Ripley, Derbyshire, England to Thomas Henry Thorpe (b 1858) and Sarah (b 1858). His siblings were: James William (Jim) (1878-1967), Alice (b 1885), Ann Sarah (b 1886) and Henry (b 1892). In 1901, the Thorpe family was living in Ripley, Derbyshire, England.

Alonzo boarded SS ‘Empress of Ireland’ on 21 May 1909 and arrived in Quebec City, Quebec on 28 May 1909. He was heading for Asquith, Saskatchewan to join his brother. In 1911, he was living with his brother, James, and his family in Asquith. He married Annie Scott, on 18 May 1916 in Dauphin, Manitoba and enlisted for WWI just eight days later on 26 May in the same city. He gave his occupation as stenographer and his residence as Dauphin.

Annie was born in 1886 in Ontario to untraced parents. In 1917 and 1918, Alonzo's name appeared in the Saskatoon City Henderson Directory at 503 Lansdowne Ave where he was listed as a barber with R J Rock. The 1921 census found Alonzo and Annie and a one year old son, Robert S, living in Grand Prairie, Alberta. In 1935, Mr and Mrs Alonzo Thorpe appeared on a voter's list in Peace River, Alberta. Alonzo's occupation was given as a barber. Alonzo died in 1935 and Annie in 1979. Both are buried in Grande Prairie Municipal Cemetery.

All documentation that was found used the name Alonzo, but the image of the tombstone, which is almost assuredly for the same person, had the name Alonza.

This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Thorpe Tree.
