CHARLES AUGUSTUS FOX

Charles Augustus Fox was born on 4 June 1859 in Coningsby, Lincolnshire, England to George Fox (1830-1912) & Hannah Hullet (1935-1912). Charles had four sisters, Mary Jane (1854-1934), Caroline (b 1861), Annie (b 1864) & Alice (1868-1944) and three brothers, George (b 1856), James (1859-1916) & Frederick Harry (1873-1962). Charles’ family moved to Lincoln and this where he grew up. By 1881, Charles had moved to London and was living with the Reeve family at 274 Essex Rd, Islington. His occupation was a Solicitors General Clerk.

In October 1886 at St Saviour, Southwark, London, Charles married Mary Ann Varnam (1860-1938). Mary was born in London to James Varnam (1921-1959) & Emily Burton(1827-1901). Mary had one sister, Clara (b 1853) & one brother, James (b 1857). Charles & Mary moved to Beckenham on the outskirts of London where George was a solicitor. They had four children, Violet Catherine (1888-1912), Charles John (1889-1916), Mary Winnifred Margerite (1894-1987) & Gerald Miles Mastin (1898-1959). In 1903, the family immigrated to Canada, sailing on SS ’Lake Manitoba’ and arriving in St John, New Brunswick on 12 April.

After they arrived in Saskatoon in 1909, Charles seems to have abandoned his professional career to become a farmer. They lived at 125 5th Avenue N and Charles had a farm at Warman about seven miles to the north of Saskatoon. Violet was a stenographer for various companies until her untimely death on 16 February 1912 aged 23 years. Charles worked as clerk and later manager for Saskatoon Mercantile Agency prior to his enlistment in the CEF on 26 October 1914. He served with the 28th Battalion, Saskatchewan Regiment at Vimy in France where he was killed in action on 15 September 1916. He is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial.

Mary Winnifred Margerite seems to have adopted the name May when she came to Saskatoon. She worked as a stenographer for various law and accountancy firms in Saskatoon before becoming Insurance Manager at London Saskatchewan Investment Co in 1920. From 1933 to 1954 May was the secretary at the Technical Collegiate in Saskatoon. Throughout this time she lived at 125 5th Ave N. After her retirement she moved in an apartment in McKim Block at 416 23rd St E. May died on 11 July 1987.

Gerald lived at home with his parents and sister whilst in Saskatoon. He worked as a clerk & bookkeeper until he became manager of City Coal Co Ltd in 1920. Gerald married Sarah Alice Edwards (1896-2005) on 24 October 1923 in Saskatoon. The couple moved to the US and settled in Oregon where Gerald was a salesman and b ranch manager for a truck insurance company. He died on 4 August 1959 in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon.
