Ralph Loveland Brownell was born on 5 December in Elkton, South Dakota, USA to George Washington Brownell (1859-1939) and Nettie V Loveland (1863-1902). Ralph had three sisters, Harriet (Hattie) Mabel (1883-1958), Ida M (1885-1964) & Esther E (b 1894). Following Nettie’s death, George subsequently married Lula Pheobie Lowe (1879-1967), by whom he had two more children, Gerald (b 1903) & Ernest Edward (b 1909).

Ralph came with his family to Canada in about 1908. His father settled near Hillsdale, Battleford, Saskatchewan. Ralph obtained a homestead grant for SW-18-45-24-W3 on 17 March 1916. Ralph travelled to Caroline, Minnesota to enlist in the US military on 5 June 1917. He returned to Manitou Lake, Battleford, Saskatchewan.

Ralph married probably a Miss Grant around this time. They had three children, Hazel (b 1923), Florence (b 1926) and George (b 1928). By the time Ralph was making his way with the three children to British Columbia via the US, his wife had died. Ralph settled in Quesnel, British Columbia and married Ella Bennett (1896-1983). Ralph worked at a garage attendant whilst in Quesnel.

Ella died on 27 May 1983 in Quesnel and Ralph on 24 May 1991.
