Flora Effie Cameron was born on 17 March 1861 in St Catharines, Niagara, Ontario to John Cameron (1825-1896) and Margaret Fitzgerald (1828-1912). Flora had twelve siblings, Barnabas Hains Cameron (1851-1898), Jane Cathrine Cameron (1852-1891), Angus Cameron (1854-1930), Donald Cameron (1856-1923), Sarah Augusta "Gus" Cameron (b 1857), John Alfred Cameron (1859-1874), Dougald Edward Cameron (b 1862), Harvey Alexander Cameron (1864-1910), Emma Ellen "Nellie" Cameron (b 1866), Margaret Cameron (b 1868), Carolyn "Carrie" Cameron (b 1870), Teresa Maud Cameron (1873-1959).
Flora grew up on the family farm in Clinton, Lincoln Co, Ontario. She married Robert Henry Home on 28 December 1887 in Pipestone, Manitoba. Robert’s surname on the marriage index is given as Horne but we believe this to be a transcription error. Robert was born on 26 June 1862 in Toronto, Ontario to Robert Home & Ann Campbell both born in Scotland according to Robert’s death certificate. Some Ancestry trees indicated their vital statistics as Robert Home (1836-1862) married Ann Campbell (1838-1914) in 1860 in St Clair, Michigan, USA and sister Isabella Jessie Home (1860-1889).
Robert and Flora had six children, Laverne Stanley (b 1888), Alice Blanche (1890-1984), John Cameron (1894-1958), Edith Maude (1899-1930), Henry (Robert) (b 1903) and Margaret Ann (1905-1983). Robert farmed at Portage La Prairie until at least 1906. From 1911 until at least 1921, he was a general insurance agent. According to Robert’s death certificate, he was a sheriff in the central jurisdiction district of Manitoba from 1898 to 1938. Robert died on 17 March 1944 at 3880 Rumble St, Burnaby, British Columbia; an address he shared with his married daughter Blanche.
Flora died on 18 April 1946 also in Burnaby.
Alice Blanche Home was born on 19 October 1890 in RM of Wallace, Manitoba. The family moved to 30 Lyon St S, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba by 1911 where Blanche was a public school teacher. The 1921 census record shows Blanche as a student studying law and still living with the family at 30 6th St S, Portage La Prairie. This may be the same house previously known as 30 Lyon St, reflecting the growing town of Portage La Prairie.
Blanche married Sherlock Macauley Gibson (1896-1964) on 23 June 1923 in Portage La Prairie. Sherlock was born on 8 April 1896 in Bellville, Ontario to David Andrew Gibson (1866-1935) and Alice Annette Booth (1866-1905). He had three siblings, Lawrence Booth (b 1899), Audrey W (b 1901) and Benjamin Booth (b 1904). Sherlock enlisted in the CEF on 28 August 1915 whilst he was a student aged 19 years. On 27 December 1917, he was appointed a Flying Officer. He was released from the military as a Lieutenant on 8 July 1919. Sherlock and Blanche lived in Winnipeg in 1935 before settling in Vancouver, British Columbia. Sherlock was an insurance agent.
Sherlock died on 9 November 1964 in Vancouver and Blanche died there on 21 May 1984.
Edith Maude Home was born on 8 March 1899 in Portage La Prairie. Maude married Alexander Buchanan Brown (1888-1930) on 28 June 1919 in Portage La Prairie. Alexander was born in Scotland to James Alexander Brown (1851-1901) and Catherine Player (d 1914). He had four sisters, Cathrine “ Kate” (1880-1964), Mary (b 1882), Georgina Johnstone (b 1884) and Gladys (1887-1965). Alexander and Maude had two daughters, Elizabeth (Betty) Cameron (1920-2011) and Margaret Player (1926-2004). In 1921, Alexander and Maude were living at 1452 Garnet St, Regina, Saskatchewan when Alexander was a manager.
Maude died on 28 November 1928 and Alexander died in 1930, both in Portage La Prairie.
John Cameron Home (1894-1958), the brother of Blanche and Maude, is the likely link to Saskatoon. John enlisted in the CEF on 1 March 1915. He served overseas with the 45th Battalion and was invalided home on SS 'Braemar Castle', arriving in St John, New Brunswick on 28 December 1917. His injuries were described as ‘I.C.T. R leg’, probably inflammation of connective tissue to right leg. Following his discharge he was a fireman in Saskatoon lodging at 518 Ave E South in 1918-1919. John married Winnifred Jane Bickle (1891-1966) on 29 November 1919 in Portage La Prairie. John and Winnifred had two daughters, Jean (b 1920) and Florence Elizabeth Gloria (1924-1998). John died in Vancouver, British Columbia on 7 February 1958 having worked as a locomotive engineer for CNR for many years.
