THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

ALICE JANE McCOMB

Alice Jane McComb was born on 15 August 1870 in Ontario to Ephriam Carr McComb (1837-1886) and Jane McBride (1836-1883). Her siblings were: William John (1861-1935), Robert James (1864-1943), Mary Elizabeth (1868-1906), Ephriam Thomas (Tom) (1872-1950), Joseph Edgar (1874-1932), Richard (1879-1947) and Wesley (1881-1882). The McComb family lived in Euphrasia, Grey, Ontario (1871), Minto, Wellington, Ontario (1881) and Whitehead, Manitoba (1891).

In 1901 Alice was living with her brother, Thomas, in Whitehead. By 1906 she had moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. From 1915 to 1921 she lived at Apartment 5 Stewart Block, 117a 20th St E and worked as a clerk at the post office. Alice moved several times over the years in Saskatoon: she lived at 238 Ave F North, 502 24th St W, #51 Kewanee Apartments 502 5th Ave and #7 Masonic Temple, 404 21st St E.

Alice retired in 1945, after thirty years of service with the Post Office having remained throughout a clerk selling postage stamps.

She died in Vancouver, British Columbia on 9 May 1949. According to her death registration, she was single, had lived in British Columbia for 8 months.

The signature on the quilt was quite clearly Alice A McComb, but we could find no one by that name in Saskatoon and none of her brothers married an Alice. We have speculated that Alice may have verbally said her name to someone and asked them to write it on the quilt for her. Perhaps they mistook J for A as they sound similar. It is also possible that we have not identified the correct signer.

This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave McComb Tree.
