On 18 June 1907 in Lanark, Ontario, he married Jeanetta (Nettie, Janet) Miller who was born on 21 December 1868 in Appleton, Ontario to Duncan Miller (1831-1888) and Mary Struthers (1934-1913). Stephen trained for the teaching profession and the ministry at McGill University. By 1916, he and Nettie were living at 1115 Aird St in Saskatoon where he worked as a teacher. His obituary states that he had resided in Saskatoon for the previous 39 years, but it appears that he had a brief spell of teaching in Ardath, Saskatchewan around 1921 before returning to Saskatoon. Stephen and Nettie lived at 415 Lansdowne Ave from 1923.

Nettie died on 4 May 1949 and Stephen died on 7 May 1952, both in Saskatoon. They are buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon.
