GEORGE " EDGAR" KNECHTEL and VIOLET M KNECHTEL née SHANNON

George "Edgar" Knechtel was born on 27 September 1879 in Hanover, Grey, Ontario to Jacob Joseph Knechtel (1851-1924) and Anna (Annie) Barnes (1860 to 1930). His siblings were: Orva (Oriva) Seth Lamont (1881-1956), Ida May (1883-1974), Oscar (1885-1927), Homer Franklin (1886-1887), Oliver Wesley (1889-1889), Wilmer R (1889-1889), Naomi Lulu (1891-1895), Emerald Ward (1895-1968) and Wilmer Reginald (1902-1966).

Edgar married Violet M Shannon on 29 October 1901. She was born on 13 June 1882 in Seaforth, Huron, Ontario to Francis (Frank) Shannon (1859-1898) and Lavina Shelton (1860-1942). On her birth registration her surname was recorded as Shanahan, but in all other records the surname was given as Shannon. She had one brother, Clarence Edgar (1889-1921). In 1891 the Shannon family was living in Huron, Bruce, Ontario. Edgar and Violet had a son, Ira Francis Edgar, on 24 July 1902 in Rosthern, Saskatchewan.

The 1911 census found them living in Brandon, Manitoba. By this time they had a second son, Robert George Ernest, who was born on 30 December 1905 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Violet's mother, Levina, and her brother, Clarence, were also living with them. Edgar's name first appeared in Saskatoon Henderson Directories in 1912. He was listed at 230 2nd Ave North and was manager of The Knechtel Company (plumbers). By 1913 the Knechtel family was living at 512 Bedford Road where they remained until 1923. In 1914, the names Mr and Mrs G E Knechtel appeared on the roll for 3rd Ave Methodist Church and in 1916 the names of Robert and Ira were added. In 1916 Edgar was a salesman for McLaughlin Carriage Company. By 1918 he was manager of Saskatchewan Motors Ltd and from 1921 to 1923 was a salesman for Bowser Tank Company. Edgar disappeared from Henderson City Directories after 1923.

According to the death registrations of Violet and Edgar, they moved to British Columbia in about 1936. Violet died in West Vancouver, British Columbia on 16 January 1951 and Edgar in Victoria, British Columbia on 19 October 1964. Ira died in Calgary, Alberta on 13 March 1978 and Robert in Los Angeles, California on 19 January 1970.
