BOLTON/SMITH

Robert Bolton was born on 25 July 1888 in Keppel, Grey County to William John Parker Bolton (1851-1921) and Elizabeth Frear (1857-1934). Robert had ten siblings, William Thomas (1876-1876), Willam Henry (1877-1887), Lambert (b 1880), John (1883-1885), Elizabeth Ann (b 1886), Ruth (1891-1981), Thomas George (1893-1965), Elizabeth Jane (Liza) (1896-1945) and Eva (1899-1983).

Robert married Rosetta Smith on 5 February 1913 in Culross. Rosetta was born on 2 July 1895 in Culross to Solomon Samuel Smith (1858-1922) and Phoebe Ann Hilts (1861-1922). Rosetta had three siblings, Robert H (1886-1949), Bleakney (1888-1901) and Lawrence (b 1891).

Robert and Rosetta had four children,

Bertha (b 1913),
Olive (1918-1980),
Robert Gordon (1921-1994) and
Shirley Jean (1937-1941).

Robert died in 1955 and Rosetta died in 1966.

Robert’s sister, Elizabeth Jane (Liza) Bolton was born on 14 August 1896 in Keppel, Grey County. Liza married Robert Thomas Smith on 5 August 1914 in Walkerton, Bruce County. Robert was born on 14 February 1892 in Sunningdale, Simcoe County to Robert Smith (1852-1914) and Charlotte Ann Hilts (1853-1902). Robert Sr was a brother of Solomon Samuel Smith (see above) and Martha Mary Smith (see later), and Charlotte was a sister of Phoebe Ann Hilts (see above). Robert Thomas had eight siblings, William John (1873-1950), Rebecca Ann (b 1876), Daniel (b 1877), Samuel (1878-1936), Susannah (b 1880), Ruth (b 1885), Alonzo (1888-1917) and Emily “Emma” (1898-1920).

Robert and Liza had three children,

Wilbert (1918-2000),
Hazel Elizabeth (b 1920) and
Roberta Carol (1920-1923).

Liza died in June 1945 in Toronto and Robert died on 22 January 1970.

William John Smith (brother of Robert Thomas Smith) was born on 1 October 1873 in Egremont, Grey County. He married Margaret Ann Smith on 14 March 1894 in Culross. Margaret was born on 25 April 1878 in Culross to William Bleakney Smith (1857-1921) and Mary Catherine Rawn (1854-1933). Margaret had eight siblings, Charlotte Elizabeth Bleakney (b 1881), Susannah Matilda (b 1883), Thomas (b 1885), Bleakney (b 1886), Martha Mary (b 1890), Rebecca (b 1891), William Robert (b 1894) and Charles Edward (b 1897).

William and Margaret had six children,

May (1897-1976),
Walter (1901-1984),
Cameron (1905-1945),
Helen Violet (1909-1986) and
John Thomas (Tommy) (1913-1973).

It is thought that William died in about 1950 and Margaret in about 1951.

Martha Mary Smith was born on 23 February 1851 in Egremont, Grey County to Bleakney Smith (1823-1905) and Susannah Hilts (1827-1895). Martha had fourteen siblings, Elizabeth Jane (1848-1895), Robert (1852-1914), Rebecca Margaret (1853-1932), William Bleakney (1857-1921), Mercy Rebecca (1857-1938), Solomon Samuel (1858-1922), Susannah Hester (1860-1942), Charlotte Ann (1862-1942), Ruth (1864-1898), Thomas (1866-1890), Arthur (b 1870), Albertha Matilda (1870-1921), Maggie (b 1878) and Lucy (b 1880).

Martha married William Smith on 4 February 1871 in Culross. William was born on 7 October 1847 in Brant, Bruce County to George Smith (1811-1873) and Charlotte Bacon (1827-1905). William had ten siblings, Samuel (1851-1930), Susan (1853-1915), Sarah (1855-1906), Emma (1857-1915), Gideon (1859-1927), Elizabeth (1861-1933), Margaret (1863-1929), Maria (1865-1907), Joseph (1867-1924) and Charlotte (1869-1918).

Martha and William had twelve children,

William (b 1879),
Solomon (b 1881),
Mary (1882-1958),
Robert (1885-1945),
Albert (b 1888),
Thomas (1890-1917),

Martha died on 25 April 1894 in Culross. William subsequently married Miriam Ann Rosewell on 22 February 1911 in Walkerton. Miriam was born on 11 March 1864 to Uriah Rosewell (1824-1905) and Jane Elizabeth Myers (1831-1902). Miriam died on 12 October 1933 and William on 8 January the following year, both in Bruce County.

Martha and William’s son, Robert was born on 27 May 1885 in Culross. He married Melissa May Rosewell on 20 September 1911 in Culross. Melissa was born on 11 May 1893 to Miriam Ann Rosewell (see above) and an unknown father. Robert and Melissa had ten children,

Roberta (1916-1976),
Minnie (1917-2003),
Allen (1921-1935),
Martha Lenore (1923-1975),
Nina (1935-1935) and a further four who are still living.

Samuel Smith (brother of Robert Thomas Smith) was born on 27 July 1878 in Culross. He married Elizabeth Smith on 15 July 1908 in Walkerton, Bruce County. Elizabeth was born on 14 April 1892 in Culross to William Smith (1847-1934) and Mary Martha Smith (1851-1894).

Samuel and Elizabeth had three children,

Arthur (1909-1981),
William Edward (1916-2002) and
Marion Ann (b 1920).

Samuel died on 23 April 1936 in Teeswater. No record has been found for Elizabeth’s death.

Emily “Emma” Smith (sister of Robert Thomas Smith) was born on 21 January 1898 in Culross. She married Robert H Smith on 24 July 1912 in Culross. Robert H Smith was born on 28 April 1886 in Culross to Solomon Samuel Smith (1858-1922) and Phoebe Ann hilts (1861-1922) (see above).

Emma and Robert had one child, Herman born in 1919 who died at six months. Emma died the next year on 1 April.

Robert subsequently married Ester 'Maudie' Dyer on 13 July 1921 in Teeswater, Bruce County. Maudie was born on 19 July 1898 in Durham, Bruce County to Joseph Dyer (1862-1937) and Hannah Hiscox (b 1866). Maudie had three siblings, Albert (b 1889), Nellie (b 1892) and Minnie Harriet (b 1895).

Robert and Maudie had six children,

Bessie (1916-2012),
Stanley (b 1920),
Cora (b 1924),
Ruby (b 1928),
Gordon Donald (b 1934) and
Rosie (1938-1996).

Robert H Smith died in 1949 in Sullivan Grey County and Maudie died in 1982.
