John Sr trained as a doctor at McGill Medical School, Toronto and then in New York. He came to Teeswater in 1867 and practised medicine in Teeswater for the rest of his life. His wife, Fanny Midford was the daughter of William Midford of Ottawa who was noted for his ornamental metal work; he did the ornamentation work on the parliament buildings and at the University of Toronto.
Midford, Digby and Ernest all trained as doctors in Canada and then went to undertook post-graduate work in Europe. Digby and Ernest later settled in Vancouver.

Midford remained working in Teeswater; he became Medical Officer of Health for Teeswater Village, a member of the Bruce County Medical Board and was a member of the Masonic Order for over fifty years. Midford died on 16 April 1961. Gladys died on 30 January 1980. They are both buried in the Culross-Teeswater Cemetery.
