FOWLER/HISCOX/MANN
George Sim Fowler was born on 21 March 1863 in Hawksville, Waterloo, Ontario to William Fowler (1801-1878) and Margaret Sim (1818-1904). His siblings were: James (1838-1921), Margarethe (Margaret) (b 1840), Jennet (Janet) (b 1844), Andrew (b 1845), Anna (b 1849), William (b 1853), Ellen (b 1855) and Mary (b 1858). At the time of the 1871 census he was living in Wellesley, Waterloo, but by 1881 (possibly after the death of his father), he, his mother and two siblings had moved to Elma, Perth, Ontario. His sister, Margaret Hadden and her family were enumerated in the household above them.
George married Anne Maria McDonald on 15 November 1888 in Wallace, Perth. He was a teacher residing in Elma and Anne was residing in Grey, Wellesley. Anne was born on 26 October 1866 in Wellesley to Thomas McDonald and Mary. No record of her before her marriage could be discovered. In 1891, George and Anne were living in Listowel, Perth County where George was a dentist. The following tells of George’s contribution to the life of Teeswater:
His early education was received in a rural school, then at Listowel High School and in Model School. For a number of years he taught school, earning and saving for his further education at University of Toronto.
As a young dentist he came to Teeswater about 1892 where he practised dentistry for over fifty years.
He was a man of many interests. In the early years of 1900 he was captain of a company of volunteers. Each summer, as officer commanding, he took his company to London, Ontario for two weeks of military manoeuvres.
He was vitally interested in politics from the village level to provincial and federal levels. Many years of service were given to the Teeswater School Board. As an active member of the Library Board he and a group of friends were successful in getting a Carnegie Library for Teeswater.
He was a member of several organizations. The Sons of Scotland brought many artists of distinction for the excellent Scottish concerts that became a part of the winters’ pleasures.

George and Anne had two children: Luella Graham (Nella) (1892-1948) and Grace Graham (1894-1991). By 1901, the Fowler family had moved to Teeswater, Bruce County where they remained until at least the time of the 1921 census. Anne died on 3 October 1921 in a hospital in London, Ontario and according to her death registration, was buried in Listowel, Perth County. George died on 31 December 1952 and was buried in Culross-Teeswater Cemetery in Teeswater, Ontario.
Robert Henry Omar (Harry) Hiscox was born on 6 July 1892 in Teeswater to Robert James Hiscox (1862-1924) and Martha Hooey (1859-1934). He had two brothers, William Franklin (1890-1961) and Frederick (1897-1949). William married Nella Fowler on 29 December 1915 in Teeswater. William’s brother, Harry, and Nella’s sister, Grace, were the witnesses. The last record that could be found for Harry was the 1911 census. At that time he was living in Teeswater with his parents and brothers.
Jeremiah Joseph Hiscocks was born on 28 April 1864 in Chinguacousy, Peel, Ontario to Robert Hiscocks (1821-1902) and Miriam Mathews (1830-1904). His siblings were: John Henry (b 1853), Mary Honor (b 1855), William Pitt (1857-1890), Elizabeth Jane (1859-1882), Ellen Maria (1862-1933), Robert James (1862-1924) (see above) and Miriam Rhoda (1868-1954). Jeremiah was living with his parents and siblings in Wawanosh West, Huron County, Ontario at the time of the 1871 and 1881 censuses. He married Alice Ambercine Ewing on 22 June 1887 in Teeswater. At the time of his marriage he was a tailor living in Wroxeter, Huron County, Ontario and Alice was living in Teeswater. Alice was born on 13 July 1864 to Richard Ewing (b 1841) and Ann Fallon (1842-1939). Her siblings were: Mary Elizabeth (1866-1944), Louisa Belle (1869-1937), Charles Sinclair (1872-1937), Margaret Jane (1874-1951), William Henry (1878-1919) and Sarah "Arnetta" (1880-1960). Jeremiah and Alice lived in Teeswater until at least the time of the 1921 census. They had two children: Bertram Augustus (1888-1945) and Alice Elizabeth (b 1891).
By 1921, Jeremiah was an operator for Bell Telephone. He died in 1922 and Alice, in 1939. Both are buried in Culross-Teeswater Cemetery.
Bertram was born on 7 July 1888 in Wroxeter. He married Hattie Lola Love on 1 January 1913 in Fergus, Wellington County, Ontario. Hattie was born on 10 January 1889 in Elma Twp, Perth, Ontario to James Love (1846-1890) and Anne Murphy (1847-1919). Her siblings were: Elizabeth Nina (1869-1957), Mary Louise (Minnie) (1876-1967), Sophia Ann (1876-1948), Samuel Herbert (b 1877), Jean R (Jane) (1879-1902), James L (1885-1885) and Edna Jemima (1887-1975). Coincidentally, Minnie Love married Charles Sinclair Ewing, a brother of Bertram's mother who was mentioned earlier. Bertram must have been one of the family who changed his surname to Hiscox as that is the spelling of his name on his tombstone. He gave his occupation as merchant in census records and on his marriage registration. Bertram and Hattie had one daughter, Nora Gwendolyn (1913-1997). Bertram died on 19 November 1945 in Bruce County, Ontario and Hattie on 21 June 1960 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Both are buried in Culross-Teeswater Cemetery.
It would appear that the original spelling of the surname was Hiscocks. Harry's father's tombstone had the Hiscox spelling, so it is assumed that was likely the spelling that Harry also used. Jeremiah was buried with the Hiscocks spelling and his son, Bertram, as Hiscox. It is presumed that the spelling on the quilt for Jeremiah was incorrect - the name was likely told verbally to one of the quilt makers and they spelled it wrong.
Robert John Mann was born on 10 May 1863 in Ontario to John Mann (1827) and Margaret Ellison (1827-1909). He had a brother, William (1854-1875) and two sisters, Ellinor Elizabeth (Ellen) (b 1860) and Mary Ann (b 1863). Their mother was married to Joseph Lindsey by 1871 and the children were enumerated under that surname in the 1871 census. Robert married Mary Elizabeth Ewing on 1 January 1885 in Wingham, Huron County, Ontario. Mary, whose family was discussed earlier, was born on 5 December 1886. Robert, Mary and family lived in Teeswater where Robert was a general merchant, until at least 1911. They had two children: Minnie "Merle" (1886-1977) and William Harold (1889-1956). Robert died on 25 August 1940 and Mary on 14 March 1944. Both are buried in Culross-Teeswater Cemetery.
William Mann was born on 6 December 1890. By 1921 he was a lodger with John & Jennie Linklater in Teeswater and was working as a merchant in a general store. He married Laura Bell Haynes on 17 January 1923 in Stratford, Perth County, Ontario. Laura was born on 9 August 1893 in Culross Twp to James Albert Haynes (1854-1937) and Maria Bell (1854-1922). Her siblings were: James "Russell" (1888-1970), William "Clarence" (b 1890), Mabel Frances (1892-1936) and Albert "Bertram" (1896-1981). William died in 1956 and Laura in 1975. Both are buried in Culross-Teeswater Cemetery. William may have had his name put on the quilt twice, once as Wm and once as Will.
