AITCHISON/DAY/HODGKINSON

Thomas Aitchison was born on 23 June 1865 in Hamilton Township, Ontario, Canada to William Chapman Aitchison (1824-1905) and Janet Sidey (1825-1913). Thomas had three brothers, Frances (1854-1934), George Tisdale (1868-1932) & Joseph (b 1870).

Thomas married Emily Day on 2 January 1888 in Teeswater. Emily was born on 2 June 1867 in Culross Township to George Day (1821-1900) and Mary Ann Caslick (1831-1922). Emily had one brother, George “James” (b 1858) and three sisters, Mary Jane (1863-1952), Elizabeth Ann (Annie) (1863-1933) & Emma (b 1872). Thomas worked as a furniture manufacturer in Lucknow, Bruce County. He and Emily had seven children, Roy (1888-1897), Ernest George (1889-1950), Clifton Aitchison (1892-1955), Alymer A (1895-1919), Horace (1897-1967), Mary Emily (1899-1954) and Jean Elizabeth (1900-1995).

George “James” was born on 23 May 1858, probably in East Zorra, Oxford County. He married Annie Hodgson (1868-1897) on 20 March 1888 in Wingham. James farmed in Culross. He and Annie had four children, David Stanley (b 1889), Digby “Clifford” (1892-1940), Emily (b 1894) & Myrtle (1897-1978). Clifford married Sarah Josephine Laverty (b 1902) on 4 July 1923 in Tilbury, Kent County. Myrtle was born on 10 March 1887 in Teeswater. Myrtle’s name appears with her family and also in the middle section of the quilt indicating that she was a Junior Work of the Needlework Guild.

Clifton was born on 7 March 1892 in Wingham, Ontario. He enlisted in the CEF on 23 April 1918 in London, Middlesex County giving his occupation as fireman. Clifton married Emma Amelia Urquhart (1902-1986) on 7 March 1928 in Lucknow, Bruce County. In the 1921 census, Clifton is described as a woodturner, possibly he was working in his father’s furniture business.

Mary Emily Day was born on 7 September 1899 in Wingham, Bruce County. She may subsequently have married William Forstor and died on 6 January 1954 in West Wawanosh Township.

Mary Jane Day (1863-1952) married Jeremiah Hodgkinson (1854-1948) on 1 April 1885 in Culross Township. Mary and Jeremiah had six children, Etta Mary (b 1885), Ethel (b 1886), George Hodgkinson (b 1889), Annie Lorette (b 1891), Stanley (b 1895) and Daniel Stewart (1900-1989). George was born on 26 March 1889 in Kinloss, Bruce County. He married Nettie Acton (1909-1968) and he died in 1975.

Elizabeth Ann (Annie) Day had a son Walter Day born on 27 June 1880 in Culross. Annie subsequently married George Arthur Boak (1865-1936) on 4 April 1895 in Windsor, Essex County. Walter married Isabella (Bella) McKenzie on 31 March 1909 in Kinloss, Bella died on 16 November 1942 and Walter died in 1943.
