ELIZABETH ARMITAGE née SHELTON

Elizabeth Shelton was born on 5 November 1838 in Grantham, Lincolnshire, England to William Shelton (1812-1870) and Mary Chapman (1816-1897). Elizabeth had twelve siblings, John (1836-1929), Catherine (b 1842), Francis (1844-1870), Richard Samuel "Charlie" (b 1845), Joseph (b 1846), George (b 1848), William Thomas (b 1850), Maryanne (1850-1933), Martha (1852-1923), Lydia (1854-1924), Joseph (b 1856) and Sarah E (b 1858).

William and his young family came out to Canada, probably around 1844 and by 1852 had settled in Kinloss, Bruce County.

Elizabeth married James Armitage in about 1860. James was born on 13 March 1838 to James Armitage Sr (b 1802 in Ireland ) and Mary Ann (b 1806 in Ireland). James had two brothers, John (b 1831) & William (b 1837) and one sister, Mary Anne (b 1848). In 1852, the Armitage family were farming in Kincardine, Bruce County.

Elizabeth and James had seven children, James (b 1861), Rodney (1863-1895), Fredrick (b 1865), Joan K (b 1866), Frank G (b 1868), William Leslie (b 1870) and Harry Chapman (1880-1948).

James farmed in Kinloss until his retirement when he and Elizabeth moved to Lucknow Village. William died on 5 August 1915 and Elizabeth went to live with her son, William in London, Ontario where she died on 17 March 1922.
