JOHN CALVIN BELL

John Calvin Bell was born on 6 November 1873 in Middlesex, Ontario, Canada, the son of James Bell and Mary Ann Carmichael.John had three brothers, Duncan Carmichael (1875-1929), James Albert (1877-1958) and Lawrence Earl (b 1879) and one sister, Margaret Catharine (b 1880).

John married Isabella D Oliver (b 9 August 1873 in Fullarton, Ontario) on 10 January 1900 in Perth, Ontario. Isabella was the daughter of David Oliver & Agnes Robertson. She had a brother, David Jr (b 1854) and a sister, Mary (b 1868).

The couple remained in the Perth area and John was a butter-maker in 1901.

By 1906, they had moved to Saskatoon and in 1908 were living on 24th St. John had established a real estate business with offices in Bowerman Block on 21st St. John continued to work in real estate, combining his business with others to form Mighton, Bell & Turner - Real Estate and Investments in 1909. The following years saw Saskatoon booming and John presumably prospered too.


In 1915, John was registrar at the Court House and he and Isabella had moved to 612 Saskatchewan Crescent, where they stayed for the rest of their lives. Isabella died on 8 March 1933 and John on 3 September 1942. They were both buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon.

John’s brother, Duncan Carmichael Bell followed an early interest in training and racing horses to qualify as a veterinarian at Ontario College of Veterinary Surgery, Toronto before moving to Detroit in 1906. He established a veterinary hospital and was surgeon for several departments of the city government and for many Detroit business.
