BAXTER FAMILY

Samuel Baxter was born in January 1852 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England to Joseph Baxter & Emily Best, both of Ireland. Samuel married Ellen Moody (1851-1906) on 12 October 1880 at St James Church, Trowbridge, Wiltshire, England.

Samuel and Ellen had five sons, Samuel (1882-1898), Joseph Rowland (b 1884), Percival (b 1886), Arthur Moody (1887-1965) & Herbert Victor (b 1888).

Joseph Rowland Baxter emigrated to Canada in 1906. By 1908 he was working as a compositor for the ‘The Capital’ and lived at the Saskatchewan Hotel, Saskatoon. Around this time he married Elizabeth ? And their daughter Elise was born in 1913 by which time they had a more permanent residence at 612 McPherson Ave and Joseph was foreman on the ‘Daily Star’.

Samuel came to Canada on SS ‘Lake Manitoba’ and arrived in Quebec on 12 November 1912 before he travelled on to Saskatoon to join his son. Herbert Victor joined them at McPherson Ave in 1916 and worked as a painter.
