Mary Maude/Muriel Dashney was born on 8 February 1885 in Russell, Ontario to Daniel Donald Dashney (1852-1896) & Sarah Louisa Watson (1860-1903). Mary had five brothers, William Thomas (1879-1906), John Edmund (1883-1949), Angus Alexander (1889-1970), Findley Harold (b 1891) & Donald (1897-1975) and four sisters, Hannah Mary (Hallie) (1882-1969), Eva Louise (1886-1941), Pearl (1893-1912) & Annie Christina (Christie) (1897-1975). After the death of both their parents, the children lived with their unmarried uncle Angus. Hallie married Chester Arthur Sparrow (1881-1923) in 1906 and Maude, as the eldest remaining female, became the housekeeper.
In 1916, Maude moved to Saskatoon and lived at 502 25th St E. She worked as a saleslady for the ladies’ wear store McGowan & Co. where she worked for ten years. During this time her name varied between Maude & Muriel in the city directory and election records.
Maude’s great-niece, Agnes Dashey Nolte writes:
In 1927 Maude moved to Vancouver, BC and from 1927 to 1943 she was a saleslady at Hudson Bay Store in Vancouver, in ladies wear. During those years she lived at various addresses. From 1944 to 1955 she worked for Saba Bros, ladies wear in Vancouver. From 1937 to 1955, Maude resided at 1138 Nelson St., Vancouver. Henderson Directory records for the period 1955-1962 are not online but I assume she continued to work there until her retirement in 1962. She was a petite lady, very prim & proper. From 1967 until her death I had the good fortune of visiting her a few times along with her sister Anne who also lived in New Westminster.
Maude died on 30 May 1978 in Vancouver.
