ELIZABETH MARY WILLIAMS

Elizabeth Mary Ashton was born on 25 September 1863 in St George in the East, Middlesex, England to William Outhwaite Ashton (1933-1906) and Margaret Benney (1934-1913). Her siblings were Margaret Isabella (1860-1866), Isabella (1865-1934), Louisa Edith (1869-1905), Florence Jane (b 1870), John (b 1872) and Maud Marion (b 1874).

She was married on 12 August 1884 in Bow Common St Paul, England to James Williams. James was born on 20 December 1848 in England to William Williams. Elizabeth and James had three children while living in England, William James (b 1885), Owen Glendowyn (Glen) (1887-1951) and Winifred Maude (1890-1891). At the time of the 1891 census, the family was living in Charlton, London, England.

The family immigrated to Canada in 1892 or 1893. By 1901, they were living in Wapella, Saskatchewan where Elizabeth’s parents and several of her siblings had settled several years earlier. James was a builder which was also his trade in England at the time of the 1891 census. Two daughters were born in Wapella, Phyllis Marion Archer (1899-1973) and Margery Eleanor (1903-1993). The family remained in Wapella until at least 1911.

By 1916, they had moved to 207 8th St in Saskatoon and remained there until James died on 16 November 1927. At the time of her death on 27 May 1944, Elizabeth was living in Colonsay, Saskatchewan. Both she and James were buried in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Elizabeth was the only possibility that we could find for the E A Williams name on the quilt. It was presumed that the A in the signature stood for Ashton as several women who signed the quilt used the initial of their maiden name for a middle initial.

This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Williams Tree.
