MILDRED AMELIA WILHELM née HESS
Mildred Amelia Hess was born on 4 June 1865 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Wilhelm (b 1824) and Helene Emma Hess (b 1836). Her siblings were Augusta Helena (b 1860), William (b 1868), Emma Josephine (b 1871), Charles (b 1875) and Frederick (b 1877).
In 1881 she was living with her parents and siblings in Listowel, Perth, Ontario. She married Jacob Wilhelm on 26 February 1895 in Listowel. He was born on 2 January 1866 in South East Hope, Ontario to Samuel and Magdalene Wilhelm. His siblings were John W (b 1864), Ann (b 1868) and Magdelena Elizabeth (b 1871). He had previously been married to Martha Ann (Annie) Dietrich who was born on 12 November 1865 and died of blood poisoning on 27 November 1892.
By the time of his marriage to Annie, he had become a veterinary surgeon. According to his obituary this was the approximate time that he became a veterinarian. He worked in this capacity for 15 years in Ontario before moving to Saskatchewan where he practiced for another 31 years. A son, Joseph Oscar Henry Wilhelm was born on 16 July 1899 in Shakespeare, Ontario. In 1901, the Wilhelm family was living in Easthope, Oxford, Ontario. Another son, Franklin Edward (Frank) was born on 28 July 1902 in Easthope.
By 1911, the family had moved to E ½ -35-33-28-W3 in the Humboldt district of Saskatchewan. From 1916 to 1921, they lived at 205 9th Street in Saskatoon. Jacob died in Saskatoon on 4 February 1938. At the time of their father’s death, Joseph was a physicist at the University of Toronto and Frank was an employee of the ‘Star Phoenix’ in Saskatoon. Mildred died in Saskatoon on 9 January 1943 and both she and Jacob are buried in Woodlawn Cemetery.
