Harry Vincent Clarke was born on 4 April 1894 in Wentworth, Ontario to Henry Trevelyan Clarke (1868-1938) & Rosetta Caroline Bodily (1869-1924). Harry had four brothers, Lionel Beaumaurice (Leo) (1892-1916), Charles Edward (1894-1985), Jack Trevelyan (b 1901) & Arthur Roy (1907-1990) and three sisters, Muriel Rosamond (1898-1991), Ethel (b 1914) & May (b 1915).

Harry’s brother Leo served in France during WWI and was awarded the Victoria Cross for his outstanding bravery in single-handedly defeating some 20 enemy soldiers despite being wounded in the leg. See VC Citation. Of the sixty-nine Canadian soldiers awarded the Victoria Cross during WWI, three of them, including Leo Clarke, lived on the same street, Pine Street, Winnipeg. Pine Street was renamed Valour Road in the 1920’s in their honour.

Harry married Bessie Henbrey Rogers on 12 January 1918 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Bessie was born on 10 September 1894 in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England to George Terry Rogers (1869-1944) & Elizabeth Henbrey (Bessie) Smith (1869-1955). Bessie had two brothers, George Percy (1893-1960) & Edward Charles (1908-1986) and two sisters, Gladys Terry (1901-1978) & Ola Mabel (b 1909). Harry started in employment as a press man in a printers but following his married to Bessie he worked at Eatons and progressed to be a departmental manager before he retired to Okanagan, British Columbia. Bessie died on 15 April 1975 in Penticton, British Columbia. No record has been found for Harry’s death.
