THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

Margaret "Maggie" M. Clapp and Minnie Louise Clapp were sisters born to Philip Clapp (1827-1904) & Nancy Ann Kelly (1838-1891). The sisters had six elder brothers, David Philip (1849-1927), John Strathan (1851-1919), William Robinson Allen (1853-1881), Robert Edwin (1855-1944), Benjamin Lay (1857-1859) & Henry Williams (1859-1861) and three other sisters, Nellie Mae (1865-1924), Fannie (1866-1867) & Jessie Campbell (1872-1872). Philip’s trade was a miller but he also was described as a merchant in 1871 and a clock-maker in 1881.

Minnie Louise Clapp was born on 28 October 1862 in Marysburgh, Prince Edward County, Ontario. She married Richard James Wells (1862-1929) on 17 March 1886 in Wellington, Ontario. They had two sons, Arthur J (1887-1910) & Gerald Edwin (b 1892). Richard was a commercial traveller and insurance agent until they came to Saskatoon in 1911. Richard established himself as a horse dealer and provided stabling at 330 1st Ave S employing several men. The family lived at 544 4th Ave N. After 1918 they moved out to Perdue where Richard ran a general store. Richard died on 22 April 1929. Minnie moved to British Columbia after Richard died and remained there until she died on 27 March 1955 aged 93 years.

Margaret "Maggie" M. Clapp never married and seems to have lived with Richard and Minnie in Saskatoon and then British Columbia all her life. She died in Victoria, BC on 18 November 1957 aged 88 years.

Their family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Clapp/Wells Tree.
