THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

Elizabeth (Bessie) Maud Clare was born on 31 March 1891 in Neepawa, Manitoba to George Olding Clare (1849-1935) & Frances (Fannie) Hutchinson Tweed (1854-1928). Bessie had four brothers, George "Herbert" Clare (1876-1966), Frederick Alexander Clare (b 1878), Charles Ernest Clare (1882-1982) & Harold Tweed Clare (1884-1949) and five sisters, Mabel Clare (b 1881), Florence May Clare (b 1886), Ethel Maria Clare (1888-1978), Frances Winnifred (Winnie) Tweed Clare (1894-1985) & Daisy Eleanor Clare (b 1897). George Sr was born and raised in Prescott County, Ontario but came west to Manitoba after his marriage to Fannie in 1875. He farmed in Manitoba until his 60’s when the family settled at 609 Lansdowne Ave, Saskatoon in 1912.

Bessie worked as a stenographer for various law firms in Saskatoon before her marriage to Edward Cecil Sackville (1880-1960) on 29 June 1920 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Edward was an agriculturalist living at #4 Arrand Block, 522 11th St, Saskatoon at the time of their marriage. Quite why they married in Vancouver is a mystery as both parties were living in Saskatoon prior to the wedding, the witnesses were Bessie’s brother Fred & sister Franny (?) also living in Saskatoon and the couple returned to continue living at Arrand Block after the wedding.

Edward & Bessie had a least two boys, Robert Cecil (1926-2004) & John E, possibly born later, who grew up to be an electrician & engineer.

Edward’s work took them to Swift Current for several years but they retired back to Saskatoon. Bessie died on 12 October 1951 and Edward on 7 November 1960. They were both buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon.

Their family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Clare Tree.
