EMMALINE EARNSTINE (EMMA) PHILLIPPE and HAROLD "ORVILLE" VARTY
Emmaline Earnstine (Emma) Phillippe was born on 15 August 1881 in Minnesota, USA to Peter Phillippe (1853) and Katherine Susanna (Katie) Baulig (1859-1951). Her siblings were: Robert (1887), Susan Jacobean (1889-1943), Albert Herbert (1891-1962), Maud (1892) and Harold F (1903-1975). In 1900, the Phillippe family was living in Beaulieu, Pembina, North Dakota, USA. Census records indicated that they moved to Canada in 1903 and that by 1906 they were living on 4-37-5-W3 in the RM of Corman Park, Saskatchewan. This RM was very close to Saskatoon.
Emma was a saleslady boarding with the Hamer family in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1916. Oddly, her parents were enumerated a few lines up at the same residence. Her father was listed as a janitor at the Oddfellows Temple, #5-416 21st St E in the Henderson's Directory for 1916-1917 so it is likely that this was the census address in 1916. In 1918, Emma was a department manager for J F Cairns living at 413 3rd Ave N and in 1921, a manager lodging at 726 8th Ave. She died on 4 July 1969 in Vancouver, British Columbia and her death record listed her as single.
Emma's sister, Susan, married Herbert Lee Varty (1887-1936) on 2 November 1911 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. It appeared that they had only one son, Harold "Orville" Varty who was born on 31 January 1916 in Regina, Saskatchewan. His father's name appeared in the Saskatoon City Henderson Directories for 1913 to 1915. There was a border crossing record for 1 December 1918 for Orville who was travelling with his Phillippe grandparents to the United States. Their intention was to reside in Portland, Oregon and Orville's mother was to follow later. This record placed Orville and his mother in Saskatoon in 1918. In 1920, eight year old Orville was living with his grandparents, Peter and Katie Phillippe in Salem, Marion Oregon. In 1930, Orville and his mother were living in Salem with her parents.
In 1942, Orville was listed in the Eugene, Oregon City Directory as an art supplier and at that time he had a wife, Mary. Orville died on 28 July 1983 in Geenwich, Connecticut where he had been an architect and was still married to Mary.
As the two year-old Orville Varty was living in Saskatoon in 1918 when the quilt was made, it has been presumed that someone signed the quilt with his name. He was the only Orville Varty that could be found with any connection to Saskatoon.
This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Phillippe/Varty Tree.
