JOHN ROBERT VANT and JOSEPHINE MARGARET VANT née HUGGINS

John Robert Vant was born on 4 July 1870 in Nunnington, Yorkshire, England to Thomas Vant (b 1846) and Martha Peacock (b 1848). His siblings were: Janet Lavinia (b 1872), Mary Agnes (b 1873), Arthur Edwin (1876-1963), Amy Eleanor (1878), George William (1881-1968) and Ernest Salmon (b 1883). In 1871, John and his mother were living with her parents in Nunnington. In 1881, his family which now consisted of his parents and five children were still living in Nunnington. According to census records, John immigrated to Canada in 1888.

John married Josephine Margaret Huggins on 24 November 1898 in Birtle, Manitoba. She was born on 20 March 1876 in Embro, Ontario to William Huggins (1839-1924) and Margaret Josephine Ross (1844-1930). Her siblings were: Elizabeth Frances (Bessie) (1867-1955), John Munro Ross (b 1869), Jessie Gordon (1871-1966), Edward (b 1872), William (1873-1963), David B (b 1879) and Hester (Reylena Esther) (1881-1966). In 1881, the Huggins family was living in Oxford, Ontario and by 1891 had moved to Birtle, Manitoba. The 1901 census found John and Josephine in Birtle where John was a clerk in a general store. They had three children: John "Ross", born Birtle (1901-1990), Margaret (b 1903) and Thomas "Mervyn", born Abernethy, Saskatchewan (1905-1972). By 1906, the family of five had moved to Abernethy.

In 1911 they were in Vancouver, British Columbia where John was a gardener, in 1916 they were farming land in 46-21-W2 near Weldon, Saskatchewan, and it would appear they were in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan from at least 1917 until 1922. Although a 1921 census record could not be located and none of the family was listed in the Saskatoon Henderson City Directory for 1921, there were listings for John R and occasionally, other family members in all other years from 1917 to 1922. In 1917, John was a traveler for Codville, Co, wholesale grocers, and the family was living at 818 Ave B North. In 1918 and 1919, they lived at 428 3rd Ave N, in 1920, at 430 5th Ave N and in 1922, at 206-247 3rd Ave S. Lodging at 428 3rd Ave N at the same time as the Vants was Nan Johnson who also signed the quilt.

From 1918 to 1922, John worked in various positions for Canadian Credit Men's Trust Association. In 1917, Mr and Mrs John R Vant appeared on the roll for 3rd Ave Methodist Church in Saskatoon. The names of Margaret and Ross Vant were added in 1920. All Vant names were removed from the roll in 1922. Both John and Josephine died in Edmonton, Alberta, John on 8 March 1945 and Josephine on 2 October 1958. They were both buried in Mount Pleasant Municipal Cemetery in Edmonton.
