JOHANNA ELIZABETH DANIEL (NAN) JOHNSON

Johanna Elizabeth Daniel (Nan) Johnson was born on 3 May 1895 probably in Broadview, Assiniboia East, North West Territories to Mogens “George” Johnson (1858-1940) and Emily Harriet Mary Daniel (1860-1938). Nan had ten siblings, Charles (Carl) Christian Daniel (1882-1956), Harry Daniel (1884-1964), Emma Daniel (1885-1976), Zira (b 1887), Alfred Gordon Daniel (1890-1928), Cay Stewart (1890-1977), Katie Ruth (b 1893), Harriett Emily Mary (Molly) (b 1898), Effie Laura Daniel (1901-1907) and George Daniel (1904-1986).

George was a cattle buyer and farmer. He farmed in Marquette, Manitoba from about 1900 to about 1916. Charles and Cay worked as canners; Harry and Cay enlisted in the Signal Corps in April 1916; Emma became a nurse; Zira, Katie, Nan, Molly and George all became teachers; Alfred trained as a minister.

Nan started her teaching career in Foxwarren by 1916 and came to Saskatoon in about 1918. She was living at 428 23rd Ave, Saskatoon in 1919; at the same address were John and Josephine Vant who also signed the quilt. Nan taught at King George School for some thirty years. She also taught at Saskatoon Teachers College and Victoria School.

Nan died on 20 December 1973 in Saskatoon; her funeral service was held at 3rd Ave United Church where she had been an active member for many years.
