ANTHONY JOHNSON and EMMA CABOURN JOHNSON née SCOTT

Anthony Johnson was born in about July 1861 in Holbeach, Lincolnshire, England to Edmund Johnson (b 1824) and Elizabeth Johnson (1827-1871). Anthony had seven siblings, John (b 1848), Edmund (b 1852), Thomas (b 1855), Elizabeth (b 1855), Emma (1858-1928), Harry (b 1864) and Lucy Anne (b 1867). Anthony learned the trade of boot maker and by 1881 was working in the business of John Horton (Boot Makers) at 11 Canwick Road, Lincoln.

Anthony married Emma Cabourn Scott in Lincoln in last quarter of 1883. Emma was born in about July 1861 in Navenby, Lincolnshire to Charles Scott (1832-1905) and Ann Cabourn (1833-1880). Emma had six siblings, Samuel Cabourn (1857-1942), Lavinia (b 1863), Edith Annie (b 1866), Fred (b 1867), Ada Hannah (b 1870) and Charles (b 1878). Anthony and Emma moved to Macclesfield, Cheshire and Anthony was manager of a boot dealer. They lived at 2a Market Place, Macclesfield in 1891 and 53 Westbury Road in 1901. Anthony and Emma had two daughters, Glenolvia Evelyn (1888-1988) and Doris Mabel (1894-1977).

In 1911, the family were living at 3 Vanvert Terr, St Peter Port, Guernsey, Channel Islands where Anthony continued as a manager for a boot shop.

On about 15 January 1913 Anthony boarded SS 'Dominion' in Liverpool bound for Halifax, Nova Scotia where he arrived on 25 January. His destination was Saskatoon. A few months later, Emma and the two girls came out on SS ‘Megantic’ arriving in Quebec on 21 May.

Anthony was in Saskatoon in 1913 working as a shoe maker for R Boulton with premises at 302 23rd St W. He was living at 1311 Ave G North. From 1915-16, the family lived at 602 Bedford Road and Anthony had taken over the business on 23rd St W. In 1918-1919, Anthony was an instructor at the vocational school and then joined Great Western Saddlery Co as a traveller. The family lived at 928 5th Ave and then 279 3rd Ave N during this period.

Their daughter, Glenolvia married Robert Gilbert Collins in about 1914/15. Robert was born on 30 October 1890 in Dorking, Surrey, England to Alfred Charles Collins (1851-1921) and Georgiana Waddingham (1849-1937). Robert had nine siblings. By 1911, Robert was a joiner and still living at home. Robert came out to Canada on the same voyage as Glenolvia and her sister and mother. Whether they were acquainted before embarking for Canada is not known.

Glenolvia and Robert were living at 730 Boulevard NW, Calgary, Alberta in 1916 and Robert was a teacher. They had one daughter, Dorothy born in 1918. On about 9 May 1922 they sailed on SS ‘Albania’ from Portland, Maine, USA to Liverpool arriving on 19 May. By 1924 they were living in Dorking, Surrey, England at 3 Nower Road.

Doris Mabel Johnson married Wilfred Le Page Falla (1890-1970). Wilfred was born in St Andrews, Guernsey, Channel Islands to Thomas Falla (b 1857) and Celia Victoria Renouf (b 1852). Wilfred had two siblings, Clifford Thomas (1883-1945) and Eveline E (b 1885). Whether Wilfred and Doris met when both families lived in St Peter Port, Guernsey in 1911 we do not know but it does seem likely. Unconfirmed information from other family trees indicate that Wilfred died on 17 April 1970 and that Doris died on 6 August 1977.

By 1932, Anthony and Emma were living with their daughter, Glenolvia and son-in-law Robert at 63 South Street, Dorking, Surrey, England. In 1939, they had all moved to ‘Chryston’ Vincent Lane, Dorking. Anthony died on 1 Apr 1940 in Dorking, Surrey. His executors were his two sons-in-law, Robert and Wilfred. No further information has been found about Emma.

Glenolvia died in about March 1988 in Hampshire, England.
