EIFFEL BEATRICE ALICE (ETHEL) JONES née BULL
Eiffel Beatrice Alice (Ethel) Bull was born on 24 December 1890 in Wandsworth, London, England to William Bull (1842-1900) and Mary Ann Bates (1851-1895). Ethel had four siblings, Florence (b 1888), Alfred (b 1889), William (b 1890) and Ellen R (b 1893). Ethel’s father, William was a seaman in the Royal Navy. In the 1871 census, he was a stoker aboard HMS ‘Gladiator’ in Montevideo Harbour, Uruguay, South America. William and Mary married in the first quarter of 1884 in Medway, Kent, England.
In 1891, the family were living at 103 Castle Road, Chatham, Kent and William Sr was listed as a Royal Navy pensioner. He was only 49 years old. Mary died in 1895 and after William Sr died in 1900, the children were placed in orphanages. In 1901, William was at the District Home for Orphan Boys, Sutton on Sea, Kent. The same year, the three girls were in the Royal Victoria Patriotic Asylum, Wandsworth, London. This institution had been intended for the ‘Education and Training of three hundred Orphan Daughters of Soldiers, Seamen and Marines who perished in the Russian War, and for those who hereafter may require like succour’. The building still exists and has been renovated for housing, small businesses, etc. See RVPB.
In first quarter 1911, Ethel married Ernest Jones in Edmonton, Middlesex, England. Ernest was born in about 1885 in Hope, Flintshire, Wales to Edward William Jones (1862-1901) and Hannah (b 1863). Ernest had eight siblings, Albert Edward (b 1887), John G (b 1893), Lilly S (b 1894), Lemuel (b 1897), Martha Jane (b 1899), Herbert Henry (b 1900), Llewelly (b 1903) and Violet (b 1907). Ernest grew up in Wales becoming a servant and agricultural labourer before his marriage.
Shortly after his marriage, Ernest came out to Canada leaving Liverpool on about 5 March 1911 aboard SS ‘Virginia’ and arriving in Halifax on 11 March. It seems likely that Ethel followed within a few months, but we have been unable to locate any confirmation.
The family settled on land in Monet RM 257 about 50 km to the south-west of Saskatoon. Ethel and Ernest had five children, I Phyllis (b 1914), Eric (b 1918), Charley (b 1920), David and John.
Ernest died in about 1951 and Ethel on 4 June 1982 in Elrose, Saskatchewan.
A tree on Ancestry has been created for this family under the title 3rd Ave Jones 3 Tree.
Ethel’s first given name, Eiffel, probably celebrates the Eiffel Tower in Paris which opened the year before she was born.
