A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

CHARLES EDWIN WARD, ELLEN ESTELLE (NELLIE) WARD née  HICKS and

TALBOT MOWAT WARD

Charles Edwin Ward was born on 11 January 1862 in Ontario to George E Ward (1828-1900) and Fanny Mathews (1833-1873). His siblings were: John Sheldon (1856-1920), Annie Laura (1858-1871), Enora (1860-1861), Frederick A (b 1863), George Edward (1866-1903), Cecilia Juliette (1867-1951) and Ella Elizabeth (1869-1952). In 1871, the Ward family was living in London, Ontario.

Charles married Ellen Estelle (Nellie) (Ella) Hicks on 20 February 1901 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She was born on 10 December 1873 in Norfolk, Ontario to Gideon Garrison Hicks (1839-1923) and Mary Elizabeth Cradock (1846-1924). Her siblings were: Inez Agatha (1870-1955), Maggie "Maud" (1872-1937), Elizabeth (b 1875), Florence Anna Bell (b 1877), Frank E Ellsworth (b 1879), Cora Helena (b 1882), Percy (b 1885) and John (b 1888). The Hicks family lived in Townsend, Norfolk, Ontario in 1881. Nellie had moved to Portage la Prairie by the time of the 1891 census and was a domestic in the home of Margaret Little and family.

In all census records between 1901 and 1921 Nellie and Charles lived in Portage la Prairie where Charles was a tinsmith and the family listed their religion as Methodist. They had four children: Mabel Clare (1902-1902), Charles Edwin Mile (1904-1993), Talbot "Mowat" (1906-2001) and Margaret Ellen (1911). Mowat was born on 10 December 1906 in Portage la Prairie. He married Elizabeth May Nichol on 11 July 1936. She was born on 30 October 1907 in Portage la Prairie to Archibald Nichol (b 1877) and Margaret Anna Miller (b 1888). Her siblings were: Margaret Jean (Jane) (b 1909) and Robert Thomas (b 1916). Nellie died on 13 April 1928 in Portage la Prairie, Charles on 16 March 1947 at an unknown location and Mowat on 22 May 2001 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Although nothing could be found to tie this family to Saskatoon, it is believed that three members of this family signed the quilt, Charles Ward, Nellie Ward and Mowat Ward. The observation that Mowat and Nellie signed in the same square of the quilt and Mowat's unusual name supported the conclusion that they were the signers.
