THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

HENRY EDWIN (HARRY) and ANNIE WANLESS

Henry Edwin (Harry) Wanless was born on 20 December 1889 in Morris, Manitoba to George Fitzgerald Wanless (1858-1942) and Anna (Mamie) Daum (b 1857). His sister was Eva Matilda (1891-1965). Siblings from his father's second marriage to Alma Cudmore (1882-1961) were: Kathleen Elizabeth (1904-1997), John Martin (1906-1961), Graham George (1912-1981), Gerald (b 1916), Ruby (b 1920) and Clifford (1921-2001). In 1891, Henry and his parents were living in Morris, Manitoba. It is likely that his mother died before 1901 because he and his sister Eva were enumerated with the family of their uncle and aunt, Henry and Jane Daum, in Easthope, Ontario in 1901. Henry was a servant for the 1st Hussars Regiment at Niagara on The Lake in 1908. By 1911, he had moved to 304 4th Ave, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan where he was a roomer in the home of the John Raymer family.

It is interesting to note that several members of the Raymer family, who were Methodist, also signed the quilt. In 1915, Henry's name appeared on the Roll for 3rd Ave Methodist Church. Henderson Saskatoon City Directories listed Henry at 609 Albert Street from 1916 to 1923. During that time, he was the chief shipping clerk for the Massey-Harris Company. The 1921 census found him married to a woman named Annie with two young sons, aged three years and one year. The family was living at 609 Albert Avenue. From the age of the elder son, we may assume that they married in about 1917. Annie was born in about 1884 in Ontario. One tree on Ancestry indicated that Henry died in about 1947, but nothing more could conclusively be discovered about him or Annie.

This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Wanless Tree.
