Frederick John Coates was born in January 1892 in North Petherton, Somerset, England to James Coates (1858-1930) & Alice Emily Bell (1867-1940). Fred had six brothers, Percival George (1889-1960), Reginald James (b 1890), Herbert William (1894-1968), James (1895-1968), Walter Henry (b 1904) & Cuthbert David (1906-1981) and four sisters, Margaret Alice (b 1896), Loiusa K (b 1898), Eva May (1900-1991) & Florence May (Flossie) (b 1901).
James was a farmer and cattle, sheep & pig dealer in North Petherton, Somerset during 1900-1911. His sons helped on the farm as they grew up. In 1912, James & Alice and Walter, Cuthbert & Flossie sailed from Liverpool departing about 27 July on SS ‘Corsican’ for Quebec, en route to Saskatoon. It seems likely that Fred, Percy & Herbert had sailed in 1911 and were already in Saskatoon. Percy returned to England, married Lily Theresa Nicholson in 1915 in Bath, Somerset and appears to have remained in England until his death in 1960.
Fred & Herbert worked as butchers in the retail meat trade in Saskatoon before setting themselves up as grocers. The family stayed together at various addresses in the early years - 830 Ave H North, 424 Ave M North, 1715 Coy Ave & 318 11th St, Saskatoon. During this time Fred married Bessie (b 1890 in England). Perhaps their business did not prosper as by 1922, Fred worked as a clerk for William Robertson, retail grocers. Fred died on 17 April 1926 and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon.
Cuthbert trained as a jeweller & watchmaker, working in this trade in Saskatoon until at least 1953. He married Elsiebeth Ruth Annette Rose. They retired to Victoria, British Columbia where Elsiebeth died on 28 March 1977 and Cuthbert on 1 May 1981.
