Charles Marshall Coakwell was born on 30 December 1876 in Pickering, Durham, Ontario to James Coakwell (1848-1936) & Jane Marshall (1848-1931). James was born in Burstwick, Yorkshire, England and emigrated to Canada in the 1860s. He established a harness making business and married Jane in Whitby, Ontario.

Charles had two brothers, William James (1875-1939) & John Albert (1884-1950) and three sisters, Charlotte Eliza (Nellie) (b 1878), Annie Jane (b 1880) & Frances Vietta (1883-1968).

Charles married Annie Day Dawson and they moved to Unity, Saskatchewan where Charles followed his father as a harness maker & saddler. Annie was born on 17 February 1887 in Russell, Ontario to Joseph Dawson (1837-1902) & Elizabeth Annie Young (1844-1927). Annie had three brothers, Francis William (1869-1943), Clarence (b 1876) & George Russell (1879-1952) and four sisters, Amanda Jane (1870-1950), Harriet “Ida” (1873-1941), Della May (1882-1961) & Minnie May (1887-1912).

Charles and Annie lived in Unity, Saskatchewan, about 200 km to the north-west of Saskatoon, where Charles was a saddler and harness maker like his father. Their daughter Lena was born in 1914 in Unity. In 1921 they had moved to Vancouver and were living at 3820 Quebec St and in 1935 were at 2256 15th St, Vancouver. Charles died on 21 January 1945 and Annie died in January 1973, both in Vancouver.

No connection has been found to link Charles & Annie with Saskatoon.
