THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

John (Jack) Bridges Cleveland was born on 25 June 1889 in Kings, Nova Scotia, Canada to George Norman Cleveland (1849-1932) & Jane (Janie) Bridges (1855-1937). Jack had two brothers, Joseph Henry Cleveland II (1890-1963) & Charles Grover Cleveland (1894-1961) and a half-brother, Douglas Norman Cleveland (1879-1930) born to George’s first wife Mary Annie Herd (d 1884). Jack also had three sisters, Mary Justina Cleveland (1892-1993), Beatrice Iona Cleveland (1895-1997) & Rita Kathleen Cleveland (1897-1985) and a half-sister Alice Jane Cleveland (b 1872).

Jack grew up in Kingsport, Nova Scotia where his father worked as a carpenter. Jack was a traveller in dry goods in 1911 and the following year married Mary Ellen Merson on 21 February in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Mary was born on 1 September 1887 in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia to Thomas Merson (b 1856) & Helen (b 1857). In 1911 Mary was a sales lady in dry goods. Perhaps this is how they met?

Jack & Mary moved to Saskatoon and lived at 715 13th St E for a couple of years. At this time Jack worked for the Early Fruit Co as a traveller. They moved to 414 10th St in 1915 and then to 326 10th St E by 1921 when Jack was a manager for Benjamin & Moore Co.

In 1928, their daughter Mydra Eleanor Duste Cleveland was born on 10 February in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Jack & Mary lived in Winnipeg until his death on 11 March 1959. Subsequently Mary moved to Vancouver where she died on 11 October 1976.
