THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

Ida May Kilburn was born on 11 January 1866 in Kilburn, New Brunswick, Canada to William Kilburn (1814-1889) & Mary Jane Hagerman (1818-1886). Ida had five sisters, Frances Jane (1838-1900), Hettie (b 1851), Emma (b 1854), Agnes (b 1858) & Jane (b 1861) and four brothers, Joas Brock (b 1842), Frances Wilmot (b 1846), John J (b 1847) & Benjamin (b 1850). The family grew up in Perth, Victoria, New Brunswick, but Ida married William Henry Coy in Boston, Massachusetts on 16 November 1892. They both gave their addresses as Boston and their occupations as telegraph operators.

William was born on 19 February 1873 in Frederickton, New Brunswick to Rev John Henry Coy (1846-1923) & Lydia Anne Manzer (1859-1908). William had three sisters, Mabel A (b 1871), Francis Annie (b 1882) & Marion Annie (b 1883) and three brothers, Frederick G (b 1875), John S (b 1880) & Charles W (b 1886).

Whilst no border crossing information has been found, by 1906 they must have been established in Saskatoon as William was elected in June to the first City Council as an alderman or councillor. In 1909 they were residing on 4th Ave, Saskatoon and William was running his own real estate and investment brokering business from Coy Block at the corner of 3rd Ave & 20th St. Two years later they had moved on from Saskatoon, but William had left his mark as Coy Avenue in the Buena Vista district is named after him.

About 1913, William and Ida settled in Vancouver, British Columbia and moved into 899 Burrard St from where William carried on his financial brokering business. They were still at the same address in 1921. William took US citizenship in 1923 and was living at 104 So Catalina St, Redondo Beach, California. It seems that William died between 1923 & 1926 as there is a travel record for Ida returning to Canada from Australia & New Zealand in March 1926 where she is describes as widow. No death record has been found for William.

Ida again travelled to Australia in the Fall of 1926, returning via England. She died in White Rock, British Columbia on 2 September 1931.

Their family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Coy Tree.
