THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

Mary Ellen Craig and Agnes Bethen Craig were born to John Paisley Craig (1846-1930) & Mary Camelon (1853-1900) in Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Mary was born on 3 July 1886 and Agnes on 8 June 1889 in White, Darling Township. They had two brothers, John A (1880-1962) & David (b 1882). Their father farmed in the Darling district throughout his life.

Agnes & Mary came to Saskatoon in 1912 and in 1913 were rooming with a Miss R Wiley, a dressmaker. Agnes was working as a tailoress at S J Sheridan and Mary was a dressmaker. They both continued with their respective trades until they married. It seems highly likely that the sisters had a hand in the making of the quilt. In about 1921 Agnes married Allan Shaw Kyle.

Allan Shaw Kyle was born on 1 October 1891 in North Winchester, Stormont, Ontario to Joseph Bennett Kyle (1866-1896) & Mary Jane (Jennie) Dempsey (1867-1942). Agnes and Allan lived in Regina for a few years and then moved to California. Allan was in government service when they married but later became a rancher when they moved to the US. They returned to Canada on their retirement and lived in New Westminster, British Columbia. Alan died on 21 May 1960. Agnes then returned to California where she died on 22 October 1981.

On 23 November 1923, Mary married Frederick Cannavan Hellawell in Los Angeles, California.

Frederick Cannavan Hellawell was born on 18 February 1891 in Church St, Withington, Lancashire, England to Thomas Henry Hellawell (1855-1938) & Ellen Hannah Pitts (1863-1894). Fred was a plumber when he came to Canada in 1911 with his brother Thomas Robert Canavan Hellawell. Thomas enlisted in the CEF in 1915 and died at Yper, Belgium on 6 June 1916.

Fred & Mary both came to the US around 1922. They lived at 1353 N 138th Place, Los Angeles and Fred became a naturalized US citizen in 1928. Their daughter, Mary Bertha was born on 28 December 1928. In 1930, Fred was an office manager for an incubator company and they were living at 24 Daniel Ave, Petaluma, Sonoma, California. In 1940, they lived at 1597 Fir Ave, Eden, Alameda, California and Fred was working for the government as a poultryman. Mary took US citizenship in 1945. Fred died on 25 August 1949 and Mary died on 8 August 1980, both in Almeda, California.

Their family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Craig Tree.
