George & Alice had six sons, Daniel George (1901-1902), Charles Edward (1903-1958), Alfred Oscar (b 1906), Raymond (b 1910), Frederick (b 1912) & William Elmont (b 1915) and four daughters, Winifred Teresa (b 1902), Florence “Esther” (b 1905), Gertrude M (b 1909) & Abigail (Abbie) (b 1914). Theresa was born on 8 March 1892 in Rapid City, Manitoba. She married Alexander Hicks (1887-1981) on 25 June 1913 in Brandon, Manitoba. Alex was born on 4 April 1887 in Quebec to Samuel Hicks & Annie Elliott.

Samuel was born on 14 March 1859 in Quebec, Canada to Henery Hicks (1816-1891) & Mary Ann Rolph (1817-1870). Around 1900, the family moved west to Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. He was a boiler maker and later a loco foreman for CNR. Samuel & Annie had one daughter, Eliza Ann born on 20 March 1883 in Quebec and three sons, Alexander, Albert Orville (b 1889) & Henry (Harry) (1893-1967). After Annie’s death, Samuel moved to Caribou, British Columbia where he was a construction foreman (1921). He died on 13 January 1952 aged 92 in Coquitlam, British Columbia.

Annie was born on 30 September 1862 in Quebec. We have been unable to identify her parents however, in 1881 she was living in St Thomas Ward, Toronto City, Ontario and working as a proof reader. She died on 26 April 1918 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Eliza married Frederick Alexander Pafford (1883-1958) on 2 July 1918 in New Westminster, British Columbia. They had two sons, Frederick Samuel born on 12 July 1924 who died a year later and William born on 29 July 1925 who died aged nine years on 14 January 1935. Eliza died on 6 July 1948 in New Westminster.

NB As Eliza signed the quilt in her maiden name and married on 2 July 1918, this gives a clue to the timing of the making of the quilt.

Annie Euphemia Hamerton (1888-1975), the wife of Frederick’s brother, Walter Edward (1890-1968) also signed the quilt. Her story is told under Annie Paffard.

In 1921, Alex & Theresa had their niece (Ester) and nephew (William) living with them. On the census return they all recorded as “Hicks”, but we have found no evidence that youngsters were either adopted or changed their names.

Esther was born in October 1905. In 1921 she was living with her aunt Theresa see above. She subsequently married a William Parsons and died on 11 October 1939.

Kathleen was born on 24 July 1904 in Brandon, Manitoba. She married William Arthur Taylor (1905-1996). They continued to live in Kathleen’s family home at 323 3rd St, Brandon throughout their married life. William was a fireman for CNR. Kathleen died on 9 May 1991 and William died on 1 March 1996.
