THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

Amy Maria Cranidge was born on 26 April 1886 in Mexbrough, Yorkshire, England to Jonathan Margrave Cranidge (1858-1944) & Charlotte Hall Auty (1862-1938). Amy had five sisters, Lilian Hilda (1884-1981), Louisa Alice (1892-1992), Annie Eugenia (1893-1896), Ethel (b 1901) & Olive (1907-1999) and five brothers, William George (1888-1879), John Margrave (1890-1979), Jonathon Hedley (1895-1992), Harold Dixon (1897-1917) and Edward Hall (1903-1961).

In 1911, Amy was living with her brothers, William & John at 1 The Green, Old Denaby, Rotherham, Yorkshire. William & John were motormen at the local coal mine and presumably Amy was housekeeping for them. Olive aged 3 was also living with them.

On 22 February 1912, Amy sailed from Liverpool aboard SS ‘Grampian‘, arriving in Halfax, Nova Scotia on 1 March. She indicated that she intended to travelled onwards by train to Winnipeg where she presumably found employment as a domestic servant as this is how she described herself in the travel records.

In 1919, Amy crossed over the border into the US arriving in Noyes, Minnesota; she cited a cousin Moses Derfur(?) as her contact in Canada, but no record has been found. A few months later she left New York for Liverpool aboard SS ‘Carmania’ arriving on 6 January 1920. At this time she described herself as ‘housekeeper’.

In 1934 she sails for Bombay, India as a nurse. No records have been found about this stage of her life.

Amy died in 1978 in Hampshire, England.

None of her siblings or parents appear to have come to Canada. Four of her brothers apparently served in the military during WWI. Harold Dixon Cranidge was not accepted for his local regiment due to his eyesight (he wore spectacles), but he was so determined to serve that he travelled to Scotland and enrolled there where the medical requirements were less stringent. He died in Flanders on 19 June 1917 aged 20.

Their family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Cranidge Tree.
