LAURA, LILLIAN and LUCILLE O’SHAUGHNESSY

Laura May O'Shaughnessy was born on 27 May 1893 in Ruthmoore, Bayfield, Wisconsin to William O'Shaughnessy (1858-1935) and Mary Magdeline Gerblick (1872-1971). Her siblings were: Annette (1891-1972), Gerald George (1895-1974), Lucille Clara (1899-1972), William Thomas (1902-1990), Lillian Ruth (1904-1985) and Veronica Mary (1908-1990). In 1900 the O'Shaughnessy family was living in Iron River, Bayfield, Wisconsin. The family immigrated to land near Pinkham, Saskatchewan in the fall of 1912 and William obtained his homestead grant on NW-27-28-25-W3 in Kindersley RM on 7 January 1915.

In 1916 they were still living on the homestead, but had moved to 1016 Eastlake Ave, Saskatoon by 1918 and were still there at the time of the 1921 census. The 1918 Saskatoon Henderson Directory had listings for many members of the family, but not William Sr. Perhaps he was still on the homestead. The following family members were listed: Mrs Mary, Gerald (active service), Laura (clk Merchants Bank), Lillian (student), Lucille (school teacher) and William (student). William Sr was listed with the rest of the family in the 1921 census and appeared in Henderson Directories from 1921 to 1925. William died in Pinkham, Saskatchewan on 15 October 1935 and was buried in Kindersley Cemetery, Kindersley, Saskatchewan.

Laura likely married Walter Joseph Murphy circa 1919 as her name was no longer listed in Hendersons after 1919. He was born 7 February 1886 in New Brunswick. According to page 150 of The Hands of Time: Village of Buchanan, 1907-1987, Walter served as post master of the Buchanan post office from 1 Feb 1918 to 1 October 1948 when he retired. Laura & Walter had one son, Terrence John (1924-1988). After their retirement, Walter and Laura moved to Burnaby, British Columbia. Walter died in Vancouver, British Columbia on 18 April 1962 and Laura on 23 November 1989 in Los Angeles, California.

Lucille was born on 14 September 1899 in Iron River, Wisconsin. She married Harris Edward Woodin on 22 August 1919 in Saskatoon. Harris was born on 3 September 1898 in Fort Atkinson, Jefferson, Wisconsin to Henry M Woodin (b 1861) and Delia B Griffin (b 1870). Lucille and Harris had two children: Thurlow E (1920-1974) and Joyce Evelyn (1921-1995). They were living in Kindersley, Saskatchewan in 1921. Harris and Lucille divorced before 1930 and he married Marjorie Adele McIver (1907-1985) on 11 September 1930 in Teton County, Montana.

In 1930, Lucille was living in Los Angeles, California with her children, mother, sister (Lillian Spencer and her husband, John G) and brother (Gerald). She died in Los Angeles on 9 March 1972 and was buried beside her mother in San Fernando Mission Cemetery, Mission Hills, Los Angeles, California.

Lillian married John G Spencer on 28 July 1926 in Los Angeles, California. He was born in 1892 in Pennsylvania to John Spencer and Rose Schuyler. John died some time before 1941 as Lillian was listed as a widow when she married Herbert Webster Arrowsmith on 21 June 1941 in Los Angeles, California. Herbert was born on 20 October 1904 in Leeds, England to Arthur Arrowsmith (b 1883) and Alice Webster (b 1884). Herbert died on 30 January 1969 in Woodland Hills, California and Lillian on 4 January 1985 in Los Angeles.

This was the only O'Shaughnessy family living in Saskatoon at the time that the quilt was being made, so we are quite positive that one of the three girls whose name began with L signed the quilt L O'Shaughnessy.
