MARGUERITE EDITH (REITA) OVAS née McLAUGHLIN
Marguerite Edith (Reita) McLaughlin was born on 9 May 1892 in Gorrie, Huron, Ontario to Nelson McLaughlin (1863-1949) and Sarah Edith (Sadie) Wright (1866-1953). Her siblings were: Roy Carlyle (1890-1949), Vera Nellie (1894-1993), Reginald St Clair (1897-1966), Lois Adelaide (1900-1900), Lloyd Everett (1902-1997) and Marjory Elizabeth (1905-2005). In 1901 the McLaughlin family lived in Howick, Huron, Ontario.
By 1911 the family had moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba. Reita was still living with her family at 824 McMillan, Winnipeg at the time of the 1916 census. She married Colin Alexander Ovas on 17 June 1916 in Winnipeg. Colin was born on 18 June 1890 in Manitoba to James Alexander Ovas (1855-1935) and Charlotte Louisa Logie (1866-1951). His siblings were: Charlotte Albertina (Bertie) (b 1886), James McDonald (b 1888), Colin McDonald (b 1889), Dorothea Kathleen (b 1891) and Alan Gordon (1905-1980). Colin was listed in the Saskatoon Henderson Directory in 1918 at 413 9th Street. He was a telegraph editor for the Daily Star. It would appear that this was the only year that Reita and Colin were in Saskatoon. Colin's brother, James, enlisted for WWI in Regina and by 1921 was a traveler, living in Saskatoon. Colin died in January 1919 and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Winnipeg.
In 1921, Reita was listed as a widow and was back living with her parents in Winnipeg. Reita worked for the Public Library in Winnipeg for may years. She died in November 1988 and was buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Winnipeg. As Reita was listed in the cemetery records under the name of Ovas, it would appear that she never remarried.
This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Ovas Tree.
