JOHN JOSEPH FAHNLENDER

John Joseph Fahnlender was born on 3 May 1880 in St Cloud, Stearns, Minnesota to Joseph Peter Fahnlender (1857-1915) & Margaret Anna Seberger (1854-1943). John had three brothers, Edward Peter (1882-1940), Frank (1886-1888) & Eugene Benedict (1890-1946) and two sisters, Olivia (1885-1889) & Margaret Vera (1893-1986). John also had two half sisters, Gladys V (1900-1960) & Florence F (1905-1988).

John’s father, Joseph Peter worked as a newspaper man all his life:

The newspaper and printing career of Mr. Fahnlender is one that has been closely identified with the development of the industry in the northwest. Among other features of his work was the establishment of the first newspaper published in the city of Devils Lake, where he resided a number of years ago. Mr. Fahnlender also operated a newspaper plant in Brainerd, Minnesota; a job plant at St. Cloud, Minnesota; and he was employed at Crookston, Fargo, Wahpeton, Cando and numerous other cities and towns in this state and in Minnesota.

Mr. Fahnlender was also a conscientious worker, and a capable man in his trade. He served in many important capacities during his printing career, and acquitted himself creditably.

John married Catherine R Faytle (1881-1964) in about 1897 in Wahpeton, Richland, North Dakota. Catherine was born in about 1881 in Austria to Jan/John Faytle (1936-1900) & Rosalie (1847-1939). John & Catherine had two boys, Raymond Arthur (1898-1964) & Harry William (1901-1979) and two daughters, Margaret Katherine (1903-1995) & Lucille Katherine (1910-2000). By 1910, the family moved to Staples Ward 2, Todd, Minnesota and John was working as a yard master for Northern Pacific Railroad. In 1917, they were living at 427 Ave D South in Saskatoon and John was a yard master for CPR. The following year they lived at 118 21st St E in Saskatoon before returning to the US.

Presumably John & Catherine had divorced as John married Lillian Ida Evans on 25 October 1923 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Lillian was born on 8 January 1877 in Utah to Hyrum Evans (1854-1944) & Henrietta Rushton (1857-1946). John & Lillian moved on to San Francisco, California by 1930 where they resided until John’s death on 16 January 1941. Lillian remained in San Francisco and she died on 10 August 1960.
